  • Leveraging Intersectionality or LI – What is it and why is it important?

    in Books

October 23, 2014 - LIVING A RICHER LIFE ~ Life Changing Talk Radio
THEME: Leveraging Intersectionality or LI – What is it and why is it important?
    INTERVIEW GUEST:
Dr. Fay Cobb Payton – Professor, Researcher, Diversity, Inclusion & Technology Advocate and the author of “Leveraging Intersectionality: Seeing and Not Seeing”
    THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE:
Intersectionality is a term that was coined by American professor Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989. Intersectionality is most commonly defined as the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage. This scholarly and progressive view of "valuing diversity" originally encompassed "women" and their experience of oppression in varying configurations and in varying degrees of intensity. Yet, the prospective has been extended into include all people who have experienced cultural patterns of oppression. The theory is that cultural patterns of oppression are not only interrelated, but are bound together and influenced by the intersectional systems of society. Examples of this include race, gender, class, ability, and ethnicity. According to one leading expert, "through an awareness and the leveraging of intersectionality, we can better acknowledge and ground the differences among us, gain the benefits of inclusion within both academic and corporation environments and enhance the global society as a whole." What is the Intersectionality and why is it important?

  • SWAG Presents: Cutthroat with Polow Don

    in Books

Tonight, Yara will be talking with Polow Don about his debut novel, Cutthroat.
Polow Don has seen his share of betrayal, violence, and definetly drama in his young years. He is currently focused on transitioning from criminal to number 1 bestseller. Experiencing the life of a criminal, indulging in everything from drug dealing to even armed robbery, Polow was tired of living a life of negativity and wanted a way out. He soon found a way, through his unique way he had with words. He began writing poetry as a way to express himself and get away from the world. Only 19, and still transitioning from childhood to manhood, Polow ran in trouble with the law for armed robbery . Receiving a life sentence for a crime he did not commit did not detour him from wanting to change. It only made him realize where he was going wrong. He needed to remove the negative things and people from his life in order for positivity to enter it.
    Cutthroat:
AFTER SPENDING OVER 2 1/2 YEARS IN JUVENILE CORRECTIONS DREADBINO TRIES TO CHANGE HIS MENTALITY TO FINALLY DO SOMETHING POSITIVE WITH HIS LIFE. BUT THINGS CHANGES WHEN HE TRIES TO PURSUE HIS CAREER, AND THEN HIS KING PIN BROTHER GETS LOCKED UP. HIS BROTHERS CONNECT FORCES DREADBINO TO WORK OFF THE DEBT THAT HIS BROTHER LEFT HIM IN. DREADBINO BECOMES RUTHLESS AND DOESN'T CARE WHO HE CROSSES. HIS MOTTO IS "IF YOU AINT WITH ME YOU AGAINST ME." BUT DURING HIS RISE TO THE TOP THE PEOPLE THAT ARE CLOSEST TO HIM ARE SECRETLY PLOTTING HIS DEMISE. EVEN HIS OWN FLESH AND BLOOD. WILL DREADBINO OPEN HIS EYES AND SEE THE DECEIT OR WILL IT BE TO LATE AND HE BECOMES ANOTHER STATISTIC. THIS STORY OF DREADBINO WILL SHOW YOU WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER LET YOUR LEFT HAND KNOW WHAT YOUR RIGHT HAND IS DOING... IT MIGHT BE DEADLY.
