Tonight Bonnie Kaye welcomes the leader of her Adult Children of Gay Fathers Support Group. Tonight they will discuss the effects that growing up in a home with a gay father who isn't open about it. Bonnie and Jason started the group about 18 months ago to give support to other adults who grew up with distorted perceptions and now struggle with numerous issues in their own adult relationships. Some of these problems include trust, guilt, low self-esteem, and anxiety. The group provides a support chat once a week and a posting board.
According to Bonnie, "We have really underestimated the damage these marriages have done to our children. Many of them have been the keepers of the "secret" fearing they will break up the family. Others feel they were lied to through their lives. All of these emotional issues create problems in their own future relationships. Understanding this can help us transition our children into a healthier state of mind."
Jason grew up with a gay father in hiding. He will discuss the effect it had on him through childhood into adult hood.
