Bonnie Kaye’s guest tonight is author and journalist Jack Engelhard. His best-selling novel Indecent Proposal, translated into more than 22 languages, was turned into a blockbuster movie starring Robert Redford and Demi Moore. The story made him famous as the foremost chronicler of moral dilemmas and of topics dealing with temptation. Jack’s newest book, Compulsive, was published this month by DayRay Literary Press. With his usual hard-edged prose, Engelhard draws us into the mind of a compulsive gambler in a work stunningly brilliant and original, and seductively readable.
Compulsive is a journey through today, with issues as current as the morning paper, brought to the fore by characters as timeless as the Bible. One example is Engelhard’s use of casinos as a metaphor for life, with the eye-in-the-sky always watching us, just as the recent NSA surveillance scandal currently in the news. All this processed through a mind addicted to gambling as surely as others are addicted to heroin. A brisk read by one of America’s most accomplished authors… not to be missed.
Engelhard has led a fascinating life which started with his family’s narrow escape from Nazi-occupied France to Canada where they lived in poverty for many years. His biographical book Escape from Mount Mariah featured a story “My Father Joe” which was made into a short film and selected for the Short Film Official Selection at CANNES Film Festival 2011 produced and directed by Nikila Cole. The book also won an award by the MPA for “Excellence In Independence Publishing.”
This show features independent authors. Most of the authors are from The Books of Excellence Co-op which you can view at www.BooksofExcellence.com. Other independenet authors are guests as time allows. '
