Craig P. Taffaro, Jr., a lifelong resident of St. Bernard, has served as St. Bernard Parish President since January 2008. Since he became president of St. Bernard he has led St. Bernard Parish, he has led the Gulf Coast in recovery projects. He is a recognized expert who has repeatedly been requested to give testimony to Congress and the Louisiana State legislature on recovery funding and disaster management. He is Vice Chairman of the regional Planning Commission, the Chairman of the St. Bernard Parish Home Mortgage Authority, and the Chairman of the St. Bernard Housing, Redevelopment, and Quality of Life Commission. Previously, he served as District D Parish Councilman in 1996-2000 and 2004-2008.
As Parish President, the Taffaro Administration has moved this parish forward in its $1 billion in federal recovery and growth efforts for St. Bernard Parish. That includes more than 50 miles of streets, new fire stations, gyms, parks, public buildings, drainage stations, sewer plants, and levee protection. Specific milestones in leading the Gulf Coast Recovery over the last two years include the closure of the MRGO, reestablishing community events and creating partnerships with the local business community, the state and federal delegations, the Governor’s Office and FEMA. Taffaro joined the metropolitan leadership in addressing the BP oil spill in efforts to protect critical fisheries and marshlands and called on the local fishing fleet to lead the response.
