Ten years ago, President Bill Clinton called together Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, for a peace conference at the Camp David presidential retreat. The prospects for peace seemed tantalizing, but the negotiations ended in failure. Since Camp David, the politics of the conflict have lurched to the right. The Second Intifada, suicide/homicide bombings, the Hamas takeover of Gaza, and the rise of Iranian influence have followed in the wake of the failure at Camp David. What went wrong? Is peace further away then ever—or not?
