BITTER FRUIT by Jacqueline Clay Chester

In 2002, my mother and I went to "Without Sanctuary", an exhibition on lynching at the MLK, Jr. Center in Atlanta.   After looking at hundreds of flyers, postcards, newspaper articles, letters, all about those who had been lynched, almost magically one picture postcard surfaced and had the name of my mother's hometown printed across the bottom.  The card also had the photo of three young men lynched from a common tree. Off to the side were the names of each victim, and George 'Papa' Martin, my great, great grandfather, was one of the names. This play salutes him, his effort, and his bravery!
