A common term in multilevel or network marketing is your upline. Who is your upline? Your immediate upline is the person that brought you the opportunity and signed you up with the company. You upline is also the person that signed them up and so on until you get to the very top of the company. The person that brought you into the company can be very instrumental to your future success. Your access to people higher up in the upline can also be a determining factor for your future success. What can you expect from you upline?
Your immediate upline (the person that signed you up), should be accessible. They may not have been in the company very long themselves, so it is not always reasonable to expect them to know everything about the company. They should, however, either be willing to find the answer or be able to get in touch with someone further up the line that does know.
You should be provided with the names of the people at least three levels above you if you ask. These three should also be accessible. There is a chain of command and generally you should start with your immediate upline. If, however, your immediate upline is not available, or you have an issue that involves your immediate upline, you should be able to contact someone higher up.
Most successful MLM uplines would agree that one of the keys to everyone being successful is working as a team. Uplines can control a lot of things about how their organization grows. Make sure you upline is extremely knowledgeable about the compensation plan and knows how to exploit to everyone’s benefit. (Again, the person that brought you into the business may or may not be the driving force behind the team since they may not have been in the business that long themselves.)
Your upline should also make sure you are aware of all the training opportunities. These opportunities may be available from the company in general or they may be specific to your team.
Different people have different goals and timelines. Your upline should help you set your individual goals and then help you get there. Goal setting (and achieving) is extremely important for your individual success and a good upline will help keep you on track.
Don’t underestimate the importance of access to a knowledgeable and accessible upline. This is especially true if you have never been in business for yourself and are not familiar with network marketing. Before you sign up, ask about the upline and if possible talk with a few of them. If they are worth working with, they will be happy to talk with you.
