    So called "Blaque History"

In elementary schools across this country, at a very young age students are taught that American history began with Columbus.  Furthermore, the majority of great historical achievements in world history belong to those of European dissent.  Is it that this group of people is just that much more smarter than everyone else?

Let us consider the mathematics behind this matter.  Europeans make up 10% of the global population.  How then can a group so small be responsible for so many achievements?  As we look further into history from a non-Euro centric perspective , we find evidence that history was intentionally misrepresented.  A white-washed history is widely accepted, and any argument against it has little opportunity to be heard and judged by the public.

We must take advantage of the resources we have now, namely our ability to read, a right that we were once denied.  There is a tremendous amount of information about our history on the pages of books that can be read for free with the use of a library card.  It's time we take the initiative to overstand the story that history tells.
Like any good story, one must start from the beginning to comprehend the present happenings.

I am currently reading one of the most influential books of my life, Ivan Van Sertima's They Came Before Columbus.  Sertima gives numerous evidence that there was substantial African population and influence in the Americas.  A mass amount of historical "coincidences" lead us to the indisputable conclusion that Africans were not only in the ancient America's, but they had great deal of contributions and important relationships with the indigenous people.

"It is hard for many to imagine the Negro-African figured being venerated as a god among the American Indians.  He has always been represented as the lowliest of the low, at least since the era of conquest and slavery.  His humiliation as a world figure begins, in fact, with the coming of Columbus...The image of the Negro-African as a backward, slow and uninvented being is still with us. Not only his manhood but and his freedom but even the memory of his cultural and technological achievements before the day of his humiliation seem to have been erased from the consciousness of history." (Sertima, pg 29)

Why is this important?  How can educating one's self on the history or African significance in pre-Colombian America help the present plights among our people?

A large majority of so-called African Americans limit themselves inside a mental box due to a mindset developed by the American society.  This mindset is often referred to as "the slave mentality."  Those that accept the mentality easily find satisfaction in providing service to/for those in power, and give trust and respect to the "slave masters" instinctively.  As for their own people, they view them as inferior, and often less deserving, in contrast to those who are served.  Every aspiration and desire belonging to the slave was not manifested by his self, but was given to , instructed and/or imitated from his master.

The slave mentality's strength and foundation lie in the replacement of five key elements: history, language, religion, and family name.  With the absence of these elements, the people are forced to adopt a new perspective on who they are and where they stand in society.  Now that we have access to our true history, we can begin to escape this mindset.  By understanding our accomplishments before European  domination, we can re root our motivations as well as intentions and find  an overstanding which will lead to solutions to our plights.
