Host Deardra Shuler talks with lead Paula Anderson of the 1960s Motown Group, "The Marvelettes." The late Gladys Horton was a founding member of the pioneering Motown girl group the Marvelettes, known for their 1961 classic "Please Mr. Postman." Initially known as the Casinyets, the Marvelettes auditioned at Motown with Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson in 1961. At the time, the label had no experience with girl groups, but nevertheless signed the group. Motown released the Marvelette's debut single, "Please Mr. Postman," featuring Marvin Gaye on drums. The single shot to Number One. Horton sang lead on many of the group's other early 1960s hits, including "Beechwood 4-5789," "Playboy" and "Too Many Fish in the Sea." Current Marvelettes are Paula Anderson, Deborah Sherman and Annette Bland-McCoy. The Marvelettes will be opening for Dennis Edwards and the Temptations Revue appearing at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx on Saturday, April 9th,For tickets call 718.960.8833 or online at www.LehmanCenter.org.
