Current polls show that approximately 55% to 60% of the American people disapprove of the way President Obama is governing the country. From mid-2008, all the way through the election, white America was in love with Barack Obama. He was everything the country needed and wanted in a leader. He was articulate, smart, cool, handsome; but most of all, he was a unifier. He was the man who would unite the country, and bring peace and prosperity to America, not to mention the world. I am curious to know; what happened from the time of the “Obama Love-Fest” of 2008 to the present. What transpired during this time that would make the country no longer have faith in their African American president? They have become so popular that President Obama has allocated $5 billion in education grant to states that encourage or promote charter schools. The proponents of charter schools accentuate only the positive aspects of these schools; however, there are some negative aspects to these schools that need to be addressed. Personally, I am not a proponent of charter schools for a number of reasons. This will be the basis of this week’s show. There are some serious ramifications that are presented by the introduction of charter schools into the African American community. Our tax dollars are used to fund public schools. The administrators of these schools, such as, the Board of Education, community school boards, and Parent Teacher Associations are either incompetent or uncaring. If all three of these bodies were doing their job the right way, there would be no need for charter schools. African Americans must become proactive in regards to the goings-on in their communities. Stand up and fight for what is right. Stop listening to the phony politicians and others who are selling us a bag of bones in regards to our children’s well being. If billions of dollars are allocated each year towards education, how come our children are failing? Is it because of incompetence, greed, lack of accountability, or is it the fact that those who are supposed to look out for us; don’t really give a damn about us? I appeal to Black America, please, let us rethink this charter school thing, because it is not all that it seems to be. This week’s topic is in response to an email I received from a listener; here is what he had to say. ------ "Malik, I've been following your show and listening to some of your discussions for the past few weeks. I've become more and more interested in the subject matter and hoped to hear a discussion about what you think Blacks/African Americans should aspire to over the course of the next 10,50,100 years. I understand that it is important to maintain a cultural tie when advancing an individual black family's status in society (to avoid "selling out"/ or "being white"), but in society, business, and politics, what is your goal for Black America then? To be more specific, what is your vision for an America where all races are truly treated equally in society, business, politics, etc? For example, President Obama identifies himself as a black man. I am sure we could unanimously agree that he is successful. However, some people, you may or may not, believe he is only successful because he has "sold out to white society" to advance. In that case, how should a black man/woman represent himself or herself to strike a balance between maintaining black individuality and integrity and still being able to advance themselves and their families in U.S. society? If you do not have the time to make this a subject of your radio I understand, but I would love to know your opinion on the questions I've asked. Thank you, pwoods8882" ------ The listener’s questions are quite appropriate and deserve serious discussion and dialogue. Here is why. This month Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell proclaimed April as Confederate History Month and the controversy has ensued. Most derided his omission of mentioning slavery as a major cause for the Civil War, and amongst further outcries he decided to include the mention of slavery as a part of the Confederacy. Despite the absurdity of omitting slavery from the Confederacy, and the emotional scars that the Confederacy invokes for many Americans, I think this controversy is much deeper than the inclusion or omission of slavery. The Confederacy tried to destroy many of the principles that have made America what it is today, and additionally the President of the Confederacy was convicted of treason. Should elected American officials be able to demand the celebration of a treasonous organization that tried to destroy many of the principles of modern day America? This week’s show will deal with the flip-side, the Black Women’s role in the development of the Black Family. I have invited three women to co-host and moderate this week’s show. The following is a synopsis of how they view the current state of the Black women and her role in the Black Family: A women’s role is very crucial in the African American household, however it is changing in order to keep up with society and our personal lifestyles. In 2010, we are providers, caregivers, mothers, wives, entrepreneurs, and much more. Our natural instinct is to nurture. However, due to the increase of demands posted upon us we are using our nurturing capabilities less and less. We are not nurturing our families and we seem to be giving the outside man quote on quote “Corporate World” more respect than our own families. In the past 50 years the percentage of African American woman between the ages of 25-54 who have never been married doubled from 20% to 40% - (Compared to 16% of white woman who have never been married. This statistic shows how we are raising families by ourselves more so with the black man in our homes. Even if families are raised out of wedlock there seems to be a missing link, which is lack of commitment. African American woman are not holding our men to the fire and I think we are SPOILING them with a pacifier rather than nurturing them with love and boundaries. We must say if you’re not going to commit then you have to leave. I think a big part of this is self love within the black woman and a lack of spirituality in her life. These women will bring their personal experiences to the discussion and hope to provide inspiration to all Black women to reclaim their glorious heritage. I would estimate that about 30 percent of the African Americans arrested are illegally searched before their arrest. This is done with impunity because law enforcement is given the privilege of discretion. For example New York City Police Deparment used their discretion when they performed 575,304 “Stop-and-Frisk” patdowns of New Yorkers in 2009. Fifty-five percent of those stopped and frisked were African American. What can we do about this. Listen in on this Thursday’s show to hear some startling ideas on how to deal with this very serious issue; especially for African American males.01:30:00Black America RisingnoAfrican Americans,Law Enforcement,Police Brutality,Racial Profiling, illegal searchesThe African-American community is continually victimized by law enforcement agencies under the pretext of a “war on drugs” or a “war on crime.” We continue to bIs There A Leadership Void in the African American Community?http://www.blogtalkradio.com/black-america-rising/2010/02/19/is-there-a-leadership-void-in-the-african-americanCurrent Eventshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/black-america-rising/2010/02/19/is-there-a-leadership-void-in-the-african-american/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/black-america-rising/2010/02/19/is-there-a-leadership-void-in-the-african-americanFri, 19 Feb 2010 01:00:00 GMTIs There A Leadership Void in the African American Community? In light of the fact that African American communities suffer from a myriad of problems – The question begs to be asked: Is There a Leadership Void in the African American Community? In the fifties and sixties it was easy to know who was for the black and who was a sell-out. Today, the distinction between the two is not so easy. In order to answer this question, we must first answer the following questions: What is today’s African American leaders’ strategy for uplifting the marginalized and disenfranchised African American communities? How do today’s so-called Black leaders compare to the Black leaders of the 50’s and 60’s? Who is providing the vision and leadership to the African American youth? This week I will give you my view on the current state of African American Leaders and leadership. I welcome you to join me in what will be a spirited and enlightening conversation.
