Career Blazer: Jim Grossett, Human Resources ...

So you want a career in Human Resources?  Whether you do or don't, Jim Grossett shared all.

With over 25 years of HR management experience, Jim is now the Senior Vice President, Human Resources for Agrium, Inc. (smart company!)  Before that, Jim was the Senior VP, HR for Molson Inc., and Senior VP, HR for Coca-Cola Beverages.  When Jim talks, you listen!

Here are a few highlights from this week's show.

When being interviewed for an HR position (or I might add, any position), please don't say "I'm here because I enjoy working with people".  If it rolls off your tongue, follow it up with something specific.

To be successful in HR, you need way more than people skills.  Try these on for size:

Analysis - you need to know how to measure and identify metrics of success

Resilience - a core requirement of today's careerist

Change agent - every-thing keeps evolving and you need to be the champion of change

Passionate - don't apply if you're not feeding your passion; its what will separate you from your competition

Business Acumen - today's HR person is tightly integrated into the business; you need to talk their language

Trends - make sure your radar picks up what's coming into the pipeline.  Stay current on emerging practices. Read, listen, talk with your network

Visionary - Big picture thinker.  Look into your crystal ball and predict what kinds of HR strategies are needed to evolve the organization

Before applying for an HR position, do your research!  Know the company.  Know the industry.  Know how the career is evolving and how you're going to be a major contributor.

You are your own career security.  The secret?  Be passionate and great at what you do.  If your current job doesn't work out, your passion and greatness will lead you to the next experience.'

Remember, in today's world, "Your credibility IS your business card".

Want to know more?  How to build the education, credentials and experience  you need?  tune in to find out ...

For more information about Agrium, Inc., please visit
http://www.Agrium.com.    There you will see how to "nourish your lifestyle and GROW your career".

Career Blazer and Fitness Diva Jessica Power Cyr

Wow, what a show!  Jessica laid it all out on the line for us today!

If you're remotely thinking that you'd like to pursue a career or j.o.b. in the fitness industry, listen to what Jessica has to say!

    Just a few takeaways:

    1. Career is personal.  Your choice starts from the inside out.  Know who you are, what your passions are and who you would like to help - and why.  Then you can start training as an expert.

    2.  The fitness industry is open and unregulated.  But don't let that fool you!  Just like any industry, you need your credentials and due dilegence.  Otherwise, you could unintentionally cause harm (and no one wants that!).  Jessica shared educational options and examples of various programs.

    3.  There are loads of jobs AND piles of money available in the fitness industry - full time and part time.  It is one of the fastest growing group of occupations today.

    4.  Make connections.  Talk with people.  Go to conferences.  Like in any job search, people are your best source to finding a career and job you'll love.

    5.  Don't discount anything until you learn more about it!  Opportunities abound!

For more info, listen to the show.  And feel free to visit Jessica at her website,
http://www.JessicaPowerCyr.com  .. she's also the Fitness Director of Heavens Fitness in Calgary, Alberta:  http://www.HeavensFitness.com.

Stay tuned to hear from more Career Blazers in this expert series!
