Code Orange - Influencing Community with Richard Messer

First, my apologies to ALL our listeners who were trying to dial into tonight's hot show with Leader, Change Agent, Community Strategist and Influencer - RICHARD MESSER.

Apparently BlogTalkRadio had a small technical problem which meant people couldn't dial in live!

That means - our special GIVE-AWAY is still up for grabs!

All you have to do is be the FIRST person to post a comment with your 1 key take-away from today's show with Richard! and you will be our lucky winner! and receive a complimentary lunch for 2 on Kerr Street.

    I've been there - you'll lovelovelove it!

Richard (as always!) was most generous to offer us a wealth of tips, strategies and recommendations for revitalizing our own communities.

As the mastermind and mini-mayor of Kerr Street - Richard knows first hand what it takes to build thriving, prosperous - involved and FUN communities that we want to work, live and play in.

Remember - a thriving community is attractive to developers and business owners which translates into career opportunities and jobs in your backyard!

    My favorite top 10 takeaways:

1 Community revitalization is about influencing change.

2 Establish a steering committee to get people talking and moving  (feed them pizza! "get food and they will come").

3 Pick 5 topics and narrow down to one thing you will do - it will put you in action and guarantee results!

4  Replace "we should do this" with "we SHALL do this".  Be positive, find a way ...

5  Build relationships - with your community, merchants, police, ward councillor ...  communicate, communicate, communicate!

6  Join your local BIA! (or DIB if you're our southern brothers and sisters).

7  Create diversity on your Board.  Richard suggests including a police officer, local service clubs, business stakeholders, maybe local churches, some movers and shakers in your community - find people who are passionate and want to make a difference.

8  Find volunteers and ask them 3 questions:
    -  Who are you?
    -  What do you want?
    -  What are you willing to share?

    Thank them and often!

Children are important!  If you can build something that speaks to youth, you have something for the duration.

10 Find your community champion!  Someone who can lead your community to a home of economic prosperity and an abundance of happy.

Bonus:  Don't re-invent the wheel!  If you want to turn your community around, find someone who's already done just that and leverage their talent, passion and experience (find YOUR Richard Messer!)

    Create Your Own Brazilian Ball

Lots of juicy dialogue tonight in my career conversation with Glain Roberts-McCabe as she shared not only what derails high potential leaders, but what every ambitious person needs to know to stay on top of their own game!

    Some highlights:

Self Awareness -  leadership is about who you are, how well you know yourself, what you say and what you do.  Contrary to popular belief, it's not about what you know.

Find your blind spots and do something about them - what does your Johari window say about you?  Ask questions, ask for feedback (demand feedback) from your team.  Do a 360.

Ask your team for candor - what am I doing right?  what's ONE thing you would like me to change?

It's not about derailment - it's about what you learn in the process.  If you're defensive, look deeper.  There's a message about something, somewhere.  Search for grassroots.

Get in the game - like it or not, there's a game being played in every organization at every level.  Know the players.  Know what's going on.  Know what's changing. Ambitious people cannot be an island on to themselves.  Success isn't reached that way.

Find your supports - listen to leadership podcasts.  Read a book.  Get a coach.  Get a mentor.  Join (or start) a Peer Forum (CEO's do it.  Entrepreneurs do it.  Why wouldn't you do it?).  Think Napoleon Hill Master-mind.

Brazilian ball - find ways to hang out with leaders you regard and respect. Volunteer on a board, golf tournament, yaht ... or a Brazilian ball.  Think outside the box!

If you don't know yourself well, how are you going to lead others?

Think of signing up for Glain's newsletter.  Next week you'll have access to her article, 5 Things That Derail Ambitious Leaders.  It's timely, topical and impactful.  Continue your own growth at www.executiveroundtable.ca
