Shaking up the Career Helping Profession

Thank you "Shawn Draisey", what a dynamo dialogue!

Lots of juice in this conversation but here are some golden nuggets when thinking of the career helping profession:

    1.  Stop asking "do you want to help?" and start asking, "do you want to understand?"  Lots of people want to help - from career counselors AND coaches to teachers, social workers, investigators ...

    Ask the right questions!

    2.  Whether you're a counselor, coach, consultant, advisor ... first meet people where they are at!

    3.  Start with a blind date, pay attention to the "3-minute intake", and decide on the next steps - commitment, relationship, trust, teamwork.

    4.  Join a team of specialists (no one person has all the answers) - if you're looking for a career transition, find the right "championship" team.

    5.  We're in a new world, a new mindset is rockin', it's time to shift to a new and improved e-transition model.

    6.  Let's stop fussing over the 2 camps (counselor or coach) and think of a new term that puts the client's needs first.  How about a new COP model?!  Be a good detective and apply curiosity and good solid investigation skills.

    7.  Whether a counselor or coach, build a portfolio of success with end results.  People want to see change and action now.  Deliver it!

    8.  Keep Shawn's "mini max" model top of mind when looking for a career specialist or looking for a career.  Minimum investment for maximum returns!

There's a blended transition happening folks!  We just scratched the surface.  To hear more - tune into the mp3.

I'm sure there will be a part II.

    cheers,
    e

Chocolates, Truffles - Counselor or Coach?

Welcome special guest, Shawn Draisey, Talent Maximizer, Master Facilitator, Executive Recruiter - Transition Expert. Join us as we uncrack the code about today's great debate - the distinction, and transition between counselor and coach. With plenty of stories and anecdotes, Shawn opens up a whole new mindset.

    Chocolates or Truffles

When looking for career-help, alot of people wonder what the difference is between seeing a career 'counselor' and a career 'coach'.  For that matter, we could add a host of other words like career ... consultant, mentor, practitioner, advisor ... to the mix.

How do you differentiate?  How do you decide what you need?

That's exactly what Shawn Draisey and I will be discussing during this week's show.  There's a whole lot of confusion going on and I'm going to interview Shawn to discern what's creating the stir.

Finding the right career guide is like opening a delicious box of chocolates.  The best helpers can offer a variety of choice and decadence while knowing what skills and strategies will feed your objectives and preferences.

Career experts require diverse skills.  They need a finger on the pulse.  Trend spotters.  They know how to discern, distinguish and discover what work will wet your appetite and how to help you satisfy it.

Chocolates are decadent.  You're results should be too.

    Counselor or Coach?

The debate intensifies.  Counselor or Coach?

This past week, all the counselors walked into their office to see a stack of new business cards.  They had been changed from counselor to coach overnight.

Some much-to-do-about-everything rumblings, looking for answers, staff wanted to understand what stood behind the title change.

So what gives?  In this case, someone (higher up in the organization) decided "coaches" translated into increased market share in an increasingly competitive environment.

The only thing is - skills haven't changed, only the title.

    So what gives?

I've called in expert Shawn Draisey who is going to join me on this week's radio broadcast and put some truths on the table.  We're going to differentiate betweeen a career 'counselor' and 'coach'.  What it means.  What's going on in the industry.  And why you should care.

    Hot. Timely.  Topical.

People want results - and they have the right to trust the person they go to in delivering the goods.

Tune in or download to your mp3.  It's a not to be missed career juice conversation.

    Workaholics Anonymous

I loved Seth Godin's blog this week!  He says,

"A workaholic lives on fear.  It's fear that drives him to show up all the time.  The best defense, apparently, is a good attendance record.  A new class of jobs (and workers) is creating a different sort of worker, though.  This is the person who works out of passion and curiosity, not fear." (Seth Godin, January 17, 2008)

    He's spot on.

If you're not working in a career and job that you're excited about, you're probably just showing up.  And where's the juice in that?

The new breed of workers build what i call the 3 S's:  significance, security and strategy.

Significance in what they do (passion).  Security in ownership (career and job choice).  Strategy in making it happen (career plan).

It's a lot more gratifying being a passionate worker than a passive one!

Open the Champaign, It's a New Year

How did you choose to ring in the new year?

Whether it likened a Champaign and Caviar moment, or more closely resembled the Beer and Pizza celebration, it hopefully made you feel fireworks.

With a new year comes new possibilities and hopeful opportunities.

Whether you want to set resolutions - or goals - or intentions, it's the time of year to review, refresh and invent what you really want for yourself.  And if you do that, you'll be one of the 10 per cent of the population that actually does it!

Think of it as a "dream with a timeline" - the dream is what you want and setting a specific timeframe is what will keep you in action to achieve it.

What big, bold, delicious goal do you want to achieve this year?  Think of that one change that will make your life sooo much sweeter!

Wishing you a joyful sparkling Happy 2008!  And just think.  2008 is the year of infinite possibilities. According to the Chinese culture, I hear that 8 is a very lucky number! And when turned sideways (new perspective), it's an infinity sign ...

Cheers to you! May your life be overflowing with champaign!
