    The Joy of Connecting

'Tis the season - 'tis always the season - to network!

Tonight I had the opportunity to interview the #1 networking expert and guru, Donna Messer.

Donna was generous in sharing plenty of strategies, tips, resources and recommendations on how to leverage the power of networking and inspired the art of building genuine connections.

Here were just 3 of my many favourite networking tips which Donna shared:

    1.  Find common ground.  Ask curious questions, listen deeply and find the common denominator that connects you to the other person.  There's always a link somewhere.  It's up to you to find it as a starting point.

    2.  "Link, Think, and Grow Rich".  Find out if you're predominantly an Orange, Red or Green. It will help you establish rapport and - help you approach anyone with confidence and sincerity.  To learn more, all you have to do is link to Donna's website
www.connectuscanada.com and you'll find this powerful resource.

    3.  If you're extremely shy, get help.  For example, Toastmasters.  Don't let introversion stop you from networking and building connections.  Turn lost opportunities into found opportunities.

As a bonus, I shared a powerful quote originated by George Bernard Shaw and then fine tuned and edited by Donna herself to make it really sing:

    A Splendid Torch

" ... Life is no brief candle for me, rather, a splendid torch, which I hold just for the moment.  I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations ..."

    Wow - thanks Donna!

Wishing everyone around the globe a joyous holiday celebration - stay well, stay connected, and may your light shine brightly.

Here's Lookin' At You - Interviewer

If you're in an interview, should you look straight into the eyes of the interviewer?

Most experts would say a resounding "yes".  The interviewer will likely assume you're truthful, know your stuff and focused.  Unfortunately, locking eyes in the interview will not necessarily help you shine.

I read some hot-off-the-press research today that was revealing.  It appears that ...

If someone asks you a difficult question, you should look away before answering.

Studies prove glancing away from the person's face will actually improve your focus and concentration.  Apparently our brains have a hard time ignoring others' faces, so it's a good idea to block out the distraction.

So next time you're in an interview situation and asked that 'tough' question - try looking away to formulate your best response and then locking eyes again once you know what you want to say.

Another interesting piece of 'hardly trivia' to share when it comes to the face -

You can tell when North Americans are happy by their smile versus Japanese who tend to look for emotional cues in the eyes.  That's why their emoticons emphasize the orbs:

    Compare for yourself:

    Cure For The Working Wounded

Did you know that most Fortune-500 CEOs stay put in their jobs even though they have more mo-ney they could possibly spend in their lifetime?  If you're thinking yeah, well these guys (and gals) are driven - how about this?

After winning the jackpot lottery, most people still show up for work the next day!

The fact is for most, work is what brings them value and makes life meaningful.

I myself remember working for a corporate company, and started feeling withdrawn and depressed (not in the clinical sense).  I saw a lot of blue Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays (hump day) ... all the way to Fridays.  Believe me, I experienced the Sunday night blues, every Sunday night ...

It wasn't until I quit and found a different employer that my fire was rekindled.

I'm always surprised by the number of people who hate and grumble endlessly about their job or workplace - get really down in the dumps when they just think about their work - and yet they can't seem to motivate themselves to change their own situation.

    Why tolerate the pain?

The right job in the right environment is like finding the cure to a really, really bad virus.  It's liberating.

Free yourself from the chains and doldrums of your current work. Procrastinating happy and a life filled with energy is too high a price to pay.

    Turbo-Charge Your Job Search

My career conversation felt more like a monologue tonight, seeming that conversations take at least 2 people!  But hey, sometimes that happens!

Expect the unexpected and move to plan B.

Similar to when plan A doesn't work in your career plan - move forward with plan B, and if necessary - plan C.

In tonight's case, I decided to fly solo and share my turbo charge job search plan.

Don't blow off the holidays as a dead hiring period - nothing is further from the truth!

I think of it as a 5/6 plan - 5 steps in 6 days.  It's intensive, it's tough - and it can work.  The key is to stay focused, committed to plan and take action.

    The highlights:

STEP 1:  Monday and Tuesday - Craft your resume, cover letter and pitch

    * Break free from the templates and give it your own style and flair.  This is not a time to blend in with the crowd!

    * I recommend ditching the 30-second elevator speech.  I think most of them sound canned and contrived.  Exchange it for something that's real and sounds like you.  You can include what you're looking for, why you're looking for it and something that says you're really good - without sounding rehearsed.

STEP 2:  Wednesday - Name the top 25 employers you want to work for (whether they're advertising or not!)

    * Get on the internet and do some research.  Think.  Talk with people.  Keep eyes peeled and ears perked.  Go to the job boards like monster and workopolis.

    *  When researching employers, take no more than 15 minutes on each; otherwise you can get bogged down - watch the clock.

STEP 3:  Thursday - Start talking and connecting, link to your personal network!

    * List 25 people you know who can help you get the job your targeting.

    *  Ask, "Do you know someone who can help me?"  Generate leads.  Don't ask "Do you have a job for me?"  Big turnoff.

    *  Make appointments to see the right recruiters.

    STEP 4:  Friday - It's Show Time

    *  Apply, apply apply for jobs!

    *  Write a short but powerful email to the executives of companies you're most interested in working for.

    *  Go to recruiter interviews as soon as they can see you.

    *  Look for your job-interest matches and blitz the market .

STEP 5:  Saturday - Review and Debrief; Tweak and Expand

    *  After taking a breather, it's time to to review.

    *  Review and debrief where you're at.

    *  Tweak your resume, cover letter and pitch.

    *  Expand your list of contacts and employers.

It's your turn.  If you don't turbo charge your job search, how will things be different next month, next year?

You know what they say, 'tis the season!
