    Passion! If only ...

When I ask you the question, "What's your passion?" - what comes to mind?

For many people it's a blank.  They don't know.  They're stuck. That's why they're asking for help.  They know if they could find their passion, they could tap into their career field of dreams.

The problem is when you ask someone (or yourself), what their passion is,  it's t-o-o big of an open-ended question.

Instead try asking questions like this.  Break it down:

What do you love to do?

    What energizes you?

What kinds of jobs interest you most?

How do you prefer to spend your spare time? where? doing what?

What kinds of things do you enjoy reading? watching? knowing about?

What kinds of jobs on tv - in the newspaper - on the job boards - grab your attention?

If you still feel stuck, it could be because you need to get out there and try more things.  Explore a little.

What would you like to try?

What kinds of things have you thought of trying but never got around to?

What have you wished you could try, but haven't yet?

Not only will you start to get clues to your inner passion, you'll also start deepening your critical thinking skills.

Listen to what you're intuition is telling you - sit up and pay attention - and then get more information - or try on an experience - to learn more.

    Engineer Your Career

I was so delighted to have the opportunity to interview my special guest tonight, Alan Vernon - now the Vice-President, Research and Development of an amazing Canadian software company, Labtronics, Inc.

Alan's a great example of recognizing and creating opportunities!

Some great advice offered in our conversation tonight.  Heads up if you're thinking of entering the software engineering field ... or most career tracks for that matter.

Here are some pearls of wisdom from the career wise:

    1.  Specialize.
In the case of software engineering, the field is so big, you're smart to choose a specialty to grow your expertise.  A generalist just won't be able to keep up with all the changes quickly evolving in this vast discipline.

    2.  Passion transcends a j.o.b.
It's not just about finding a 'job', it's about building a career you love and feeling some passion for.

    3.  Stay ahead of the curve - Read!
Read, read, read.  It's critical that you read about software development products, new technologies and what's coming down the pipeline.  Stay tuned in.  Subscribe to industry magazines, attend conferences ... do what it takes to keep yourself in the know.

    4.  It's Not Just About the Money
To be successful in a Software Development or Engineering field (any career), you need to think beyond the paycheque.  Sure it can be lucrative, but that won't bring long term success or career satisfaction.

    5.  Students - Think Co-op
If you're a student who is interested in attending the field, seriously think about entering a good Co-op program.  You'll quickly learn whether this career track is for you, you'll gain some valuable experience and hey!  you'll have the chance to impress your employer and who knows?  You could have a job offer before you graduate.

Really great solid advice!  Moving beyond a book - to real life!

Ho Ho Ho! December Hot Hiring Month

It may be a holiday month but if you're thinking about slowing down your job search right about now, you might want to think again!

December is the hottest hiring month of the year.

With new budgets, projects and contracts being planned for the new year, December is when many employers are putting on their Santa hats and hiring to fill positions.

The caveat is those industries that are overwhelmed at Christmas as is the case with retailers and restaurants. In this case you're best to wait until January to meet and greet.

With sleigh bells jingling, there's also a whole lot of schmoozing going on ...

Holiday parties, get togethers, association functions - places where you can have fun and meet a whole whack of different people from different businesses - all in the same room.

Get up, get going, polish yourself (and your resume) up and put your best foot forward ...

Just remember, when you're out there at these holiday functions, stay light but don't get toooo festive!

Easy on the wine (or beer).  Only tasteful jokes please!  No dancing on tables.

If you're shy to start conversations, just ask people questions about themselves or their interests.  Compliment something you notice or admire about them.  Find something you have in common and build rapport from there.  Voila!  Before you know it, you'll be building some great connections ...

Think about your body language.  Smiles attract.  Frown's detract.  Look friendly and people will think you're friendly.  Be approachable.

Tip:  this is not the time to give out business cards (unless you're asked!) or worse, ask someone for a job!

Start getting in the holiday spirit.  Have some fun.  You just never know who might be looking for you! Remember, employers have jobs to fill this month and who's a better fit than someone they meet and like at the holiday party?

From the mouths of job applicants

If you're looking .. or have ever looked for a new job, you likely know one of the cardinal rules:

You have to find a way to distinguish yourself from all the other candidates.

But seriously, do some people take it toooo far?  It appears there are those who have transitioned from finding a strategic way to stand out from the crowd to .. well .. finding a rather unusual (and unsuccessful) way.

In a recent poll (source:  Accountemps), senior HR, finance and marketing executives in charge of hiring reported offbeat job interview behaviors by candidates including:

    - performing their cover letter as a rap song
    - bringing mom along to speak for them
    - handing in their resume in a brown paper lunch bag
    - drafting a press release ready to announce "you're hired"
    - singing their answers to questions

The frequently asked interview question, "Why should we hire you for this job?" was also met with a few startling responses:

    - "I'd be a great addition to the company softball team"
    - "I'm allergic to unemployment"
    - "I've already applied three times and now it's my turn"
    - "I have no experience for the job I'm applying for, but my friend does"
    - "I want to "get away from people"

No doubt, these responses all left a lasting impression on their interviewer.

What kind of lasting impression do you make?

Happy thanksgiving to all of my US neighbors on this special day.  Today, i hope i have been able to share the gift of humor as well as gratitude.

    Brand-Wild

Personal branding is fast become a multi-million dollar industry.  Entrepreneurs are entering the brandmania market by the droves - selling branding as the #1 way to a perfect future.

I myself hired a reputable - well known - top dollar - 'branding coach' a couple of years ago.  The problem?  a. He never showed up for our calls on time or never showed up.  b.  He started leading me down his path of what he thought my brand should look like.

    Where's good branding in that?

    Lessons learned:

    1.  Don't let your own brand get in your way.

    2.  Be who you are - that itself is a great brand and doesn't have to cost you a pile of money.

    3.  Learn how to communicate who you are and what you want with honesty and brevity.  Walk the line.  Be clear but be open.

Think Jordon, Jeter, Gretzsky, Trump, Oprah, Ellen, Seinfeld ...

Are these people successful because they first invested piles of money in building a great brand? or - Are they successful because of who they already are from the inside out?

You know what i'm thinking!  Drop me a line about what you're thinking ...

Linked In - or Linked Out?

Does linked in really live up to what it's supposed to do?

I got a message in my inbox on the weekend to spotlight one of my connections who had seemingly made an update.  It was my regular Saturday email maintenance day and rather than delete it - curiosity got the better of me.  I decided to (as they say), link in.

Wow!  When i first made the connection, this individual only had 5 people listed as testimonials - all strong, top calibre contacts.  But this time when i went in, there were over 30 personal referrals - and another 288 connections made!

Am I missing the boat here - or is this person actually having the opposite effect he would need to help him either get more clients - or get a new job?

Personally I think so many connections dilute the impact.  I also wouldn't personally take a lot of stalk in what most of the references had to say because frankly, there are just toooo many of them and with a little investigation - they are all mutual referrals.  Feels kind of like people rubbing each others back here.

Hmm.  I'm all for online social networking but - where is the tipping point ...

I'd love to hear from you.

What do you think of Online Social Networks like Linked In?

What are you hoping to give and get from them?

Do you think they live up to their intentions?

    warmest regards,
    e
