Tonight's special guest is Larissa Clark from Houston, Texas. At 21, Larissa is perhaps NAASCA's youngest family member and volunteer. We're delighted to give her this platform to introduce herself to our followers. Her abuser was her stepfather of 8 years, and started when she was 7 years old while the family was residing in Atlanta, GA. It continued after the family moved to Denver, CO. Larissa's nanny played a central role in recognizing the intervention she so desperately needed, identifying and interceding between the teenager and her perpetrator, who was caught when she was 14 years old. As Larissa explains, "My nanny helped me reach out to the law when the time was right, which allowed me to be able to put my stepfather in prison for life." She goes on to report, "I'm really blessed how the whole judicial system treated my family and me, all through the time of the arrest to the sentencing. They provided direct phone lines to get a hold of the DA or investigator." They also supplied a list of psychologist referrals to see, which jump-started her healing process. NAASCA's proud of Larissa's commitment to using her experiences to help other young people avoid, deal with, or recover from child abuse. "I am going to Denver in a couple of days to speak on behalf of Sungate kids organization," she says. "I plan to reach out to middle schools and high schools about abuse awareness in the near future." We are delighted to have Ms Clark lead our NAASCA efforts to reach out to this community, and plan to work with her to develop programs specifically designed to help both at-risk kids and young adult survivors of child abuse.
