What is self insurance (what are self insured plans)? In 2002, the Federal Government's intergovernmental committee on Employment-Based Health Insurance Surveys approved some health insurance terms and definitions that are now used by the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) National Compensation Survey in its data collection.

"Self insured plans" is one of those terms. The definition, in that document is simply,

"A plan offered by employers who directly assume the major cost of health insurance for their employees."

In this educational broadcast interview series, employee benefits specialist Brad Gauen will share some additional important details to answer the question of "What is Self Insurance?"

He will discuss the advantages, potential pitfalls, and specific situational requirements that may add dimensions of complexity to the management of self funded plan arrangements.
