Figure skatingis one of the most popular participation sports in this country, especially among young women and girls. It ranks in spectator interest just behind professional football and baseball, yet ahead of professional and college basketball and football and many other sports.

Behind all of this, sharing much of the glamour, but more in touch with reality, is the community of amateur figure skating.

But what about the up and coming potential figure skating stars?

She might agree that more often, the hours, energy and money put out by athletes and parents, for the sport of figure skating, adds up to more than would be spent for a child playing hockey. She might also agree that at times, other children in the family of a competitive skater might indirectly, lend additional support to the athlete by sacrificing their own time and activities.

It’s not unusual for families to become geographically separated, with one parent (usually the mother) living at a distance with her skating child (e.g., Michelle Kwan, the present World Figure Skating Champion, and her mother resided 100 miles from home during the week, with weekend visits from her father).
