In 1000 days – sometime in 2013 – 11 billion square feet of digital screen surface will exist on earth, enough to cover the planet’s surface almost 50 times. And as quickly as that happens, Kaufman says, online video programming is just as quickly surfacing wherever content is found. “Imagine the day that Wikipedia becomes video-enabled,” he muses. “And when the video on Wikipedia will be as easy to edit, manipulate, correct, annotate as the text is today, it will blow the doors off of everything.”Beyond The Booknobooks, ebooks, film, publishing, ipadAs the world awaits the market arrival of the latest “screen” – in the form of the new iPad from Apple – Chris Kenneally talks with Peter Kaufman of IntelligenBringing Data to the Debate on E-book ‘Piracy’http://www.blogtalkradio.com/beyondthebook/2010/03/24/bringing-data-to-the-debate-on-e-book-piracyBookshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/beyondthebook/2010/03/24/bringing-data-to-the-debate-on-e-book-piracy/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/beyondthebook/2010/03/24/bringing-data-to-the-debate-on-e-book-piracyWed, 24 Mar 2010 22:09:57 GMTBringing Data to the Debate on E-book ‘Piracy’As e-readers and e-books gather momentum in the early days of 2010, some book publishers find themselves on the horns of a marketing dilemma. Do they join the new e-book club to capture sales, or do they stand back to keep their content safe from online “pirates”? In a conversation with Chris Kenneally at the recent Digital Book World in New York, media industry consultant Brian O’Leary discussed his firm’s research on the effect on sales when a title finds its way into an unsanctioned online market. The findings – a significant jump in sales – have surprised many in the business. “When people hear what we have to say, [they think] I might be saying … I don’t worry about piracy when in fact, what I’m saying is, I don’t worry about piracy that helps sell more books,” O’Leary stressed. “I just don’t know the difference between the piracy that hurts, and the piracy that helps, until we study it.” Beyond The Booknobooks,ebooks,e-books,publishing,authorsAs e-readers and e-books gather momentum in the early days of 2010, some book publishers find themselves on the horns of a marketing dilemma. The pair have since carried that approach forward with the creation late last year of Open Road Integrated Media. Today, the setting is a Soho loft, and not a midtown tower, so the not-so-surprising foundation for ORIM is the new world of electronic book publishing. Open Road's Chief Marketing Officer Rachel Chou discusses with Beyond The Book host Chris Kenneally why the coming book publishing revolution will likely not mean that reading gets interrupted by a movie. 00:30:00Beyond The Booknobooks, publishing, authors, film, bookThis show was prerecorded and we will not be taking phone calls When Jane Friedman and Jeff Sharp first became business partners several years ago at HarperCollWith E-Books, Take Time & Be Surehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/beyondthebook/2010/03/10/with-e-books-take-time-be-sureBookshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/beyondthebook/2010/03/10/with-e-books-take-time-be-sure/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/beyondthebook/2010/03/10/with-e-books-take-time-be-sureWed, 10 Mar 2010 19:00:00 GMTWith E-Books, Take Time & Be SureIn the middle of the e-book hurricane, it may be time for some calm thinking – along with a little debunking. Founder of Unlimited Publishing and book industry analyst Danny O. Snow tells Chris Kenneally now is a good moment for publishers and authors to stop all the rushing about. “Having observed what happened in the music business ten years ago, we are on pins and needles not to be left in the dust of technology,” Snow says. “Actually, publishers are very lucky to be behind the curve, which is kind of surprising, but we can learn from the mistakes, and the good things, that are done by others.” Without denying that the time has definitely come for book publishers to take e-Books seriously, Snow seeks to debunk some of the more prevalent myths about e-Books under current market conditions and technological realities.00:30:00Beyond The Booknobooks, ebooks, publishing, kindle, ipadIn the middle of the e-book hurricane, it may be time for some calm thinking – along with a little debunking. Authorlink CEO Doris Booth tells Chris Kenneally, “The big question for all authors today is how can they strategize to better cover the marketplace, the total marketplace, because I think there’s a whole lot of confusion.” Drawing on her experience as an author advocate and her knowledge of publishing technology, Booth details the basic approaches and stresses, “How many readers are you missing? Well, there are already three million e-reader units installed in the marketplace this year.” New York Times best-selling author Stephen Michaud joins the discussion to report that with seven e-book titles now in print, “my e-book readership is not cannibalizing my hardcover or hard copy readership.” 00:45:00Beyond The Booknobooks, ebooks, publishing, authors, technologyEven while many publishers prepare to set up shop in the new e-book marketplace, authors are likely to wonder what’s in it for them. At Beyond the Book, we've followed in recent weeks a number of angles in this important story; we will continue this special coverage in coming weeks with a focus series on e-books that debuts Wednesday, February 24, right here on BlogTalkRadio with an interview with copyright commentator and industry iconclast Cory Doctorow. Sounding more like a college economics professor than a bestselling sci-fi author, Doctorow offers his suggestions for how publishers should arrive at the "right price" for e-books. As for copyright, he defends "fair use" and questions strict interpretations of the phrase, "all rights reserved." Our regular reporting on the publishing and media industry continues here at http://www.beyondthebook.com where the e-book series will also appear on its own channel. 00:30:00Beyond The Booknobooks, publishing,Ebooks, authors,Cory DoctorowFor publishers, authors and their readers, 2010 will likely go down as the year when e-books finally and decisively won a permanent place in the literary hierarFrom the Frontlines of the E-book Warshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/beyondthebook/2010/02/10/ebook-warsBookshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/beyondthebook/2010/02/10/ebook-wars/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/beyondthebook/2010/02/10/ebook-warsWed, 10 Feb 2010 19:00:00 GMTFrom the Frontlines of the E-book WarsFrom host Christopher Kenneally: From the debut of the iPad to MacMillan’s challenge of Amazon’s pricing model for Kindle book downloads, the news in recent weeks on the multiple fronts in the electronic publishing revolution has raised many questions and heightened concerns for the future of our industry.
