"Volunteering Is Phenomenal." I can think of few things worse than making time to volunteer only to find an empty experience that made no real impact whatsover. Perhaps for those who only volunteer to slap something new on their resume, it doesn't really matter. But for the people (young and old) that believe strongly in volunteerism, "phenomenal" opportunities to touch real lives are definitely within reach.Imagine an ordinary citizen appointed by judges to advocate on behalf of children in the foster care system. The program is called CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). "More than 850 a children a day enter the foster care system in the United States -- nearly 6,000 a week." [source National CASA] The statistics honestly floored me but they are real. So many of these children are literally forgotten in a completely overburdened system. As a CASA volunteer and recruiter, I can tell you that it's not easy work but one of the most important roles people can play.Whether your preference are infants/adolescents who can barely speak for themselves or teens who will soon 'age out' of the system to enter society on their own, you can give these children a voice. Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw have recently been named national spokespersons for the National CASA's Forgotten Children Campaign which will hopefully help to raise awareness. Learn how you can "speak up for a child." Visit the National CASA website to learn about the Forgotten Children Campaign and local opportunities in your area.
