It's deja vu all over again.  Today, Corey Glass, a member of the Indiana National Guard, awaits his fate, in my beloved Toronto, as he faces deportation, if the Canadian Federal Court does not grant him refugee status, on Thursday, July 10.

Corey Glass was not guarding any homes in Indiana, due to floods, but was assigned to Iraq.

Lee Zaslofsky, who heads the group, Draft Dodgers War Resisters Support Campain, and is in Canada, legally, after coming here during the Vietnam War, lends moral support to Glass.

Corey has been hangin out at my old haunt, Grossman's on Spadina and College.

Lemmetellya about Grossman's.   After living in Miami, in  my early 20's, I "assumed" (uh oh, never assume anything), that Grossman's was like a super upscale "resort" ala, say, The Pagoda, on Collins Avenue.

Wrong.

Imagine the big hair-dos of the '80s, and one of them on top of my head, along with tight Levi's,  a bra top and the Blues bein played at Grossman's.  The Catskills it ain't.

My most vivid memory, is of coke bein laid out on a table, and i wasn't even there 5 minutes.  The only thought racing through my head wass, "I am going to be busted out of Canada, and I'm not dealin this stuff."  We're not talking the Coke, that Simon Cowell drinks out of a red glass, on a Wednesday night.

I think my 2nd most vivid memory is, that the bathroom door, oh excuse me, in Canada it is NOT the bathroom, because there is no bath tub, it is the washroom, (many a Canuck has reprimanded me about this fox paw) well anyway, the door to the women's washroom was open.  Only in Toronto, only at Grossman's.  Did i have shy kidneys that night?  Hell no.  There were private stalls, so when at Grossman's, do as the regulars do, and I did.

Shy is not in my DNA.

Haven't been to Grossman's in a long time.  Last time i was in the vicinity, was last December, when I was invited to a posh party at a new condo on the Lake.  To get there I had to take the Spadina Streetcar.  As I passed Grossman's, I was amazed to see nothing had changed.  There is a God.  The light green exterior, was still the same, with the black Grossman's logo still there, after all these years.  It brought tears to my eyes and many memories.  I am sure the passengers were wondering why i had that **** eatin grin on my face.  Oh, if they only knew.

I will be there this Wedenesday, to join my fellow Americans.   They're regular get together night.   Hey, somebody's gotta buy this kid a drink.  And it may as well be me.  Sometimes you must take a stand for what you believe in.  And I believe in Canadian Beer, and Peace on Earth.

The cheese stands alone.

God bless you Canada, and judges, please make the right decision.

If God were a  a country, I imagine Him as Canada. They both have Mercy.
