Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School,
where he taught medical students, interns and residents, as well as fellow
clinicians at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston.
Dr. Altman is a presently a consultative gynecologist advising
patients on peri and post-menopausal issues, hormonal therapy and sexual
function and dysfunction, as well as Ass’t. Clinical Professor of Obstetrics
and Gynecology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is also an
internationally known lecturer and author of books and textbook chapters.
Perimenopause, sexual function and hormonal therapy were the topics covered in
his first book, Making
Love the Way We Used To...or Better; Secrets to Satisfying Midlife Sexuality.
His second, The Betrayal
of American Women; Don't Throw Away Those Hormones So Quickly,
is due out shortly as an e-book which will be updated regularly on-line. He
co-authored the chapter on Hormonal Therapy in the recently released
Sexual Function and Dysfunction; the chapter on Sexual
Dysfunction in the just released textbook, Psychosomatic Medicine; as well as the
chapter on Midlife Sexuality in the Textbook
of Perimenopausal Gynecology. He is President of ISSWSH (The
International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health), the premier
multidisciplinary, academic and clinical society in the world uniquely focused
on female sexual research and therapeutic issues.
An important part of his ongoing
career has been the education of the lay public on postmenopausal hormonal
therapy after the misrepresentation of the results of the Women’s Health
Initiative (WHI) study were presented in July, 2002.
This has led to his
involvement in the production of a full-length documentary movie, Hot Flash Havoc, which will be distributed in theatres nationally in September. Women
around the country have found Dr. Altman invaluable as a consultant-by-phone
helping them make better choices concerning menopausal health, hormones and
sexual issues. He lives in Aspen, CO with his wife of 37 years and bases his
consultative practice there.
