Getting started is critical for creating a new role for yourself.  Being your own best boss is the goal but getting yourself started is the key to success.  Getting started includes the planning, the goals, the choices, the decisions that all happen before the door can open to waiting clients.  When starting over as the boss instead of the employee, the entrepreneur wants to rush out and just do it.  But those of us in the field have learned - through trial and error - that many actions are necessary before the first customer is satisfied with our new venture. 

 

In one venture, I found that insurance and real estate agents were better to deliver my service to homeowners and renters.  In another, teamwork brought many ideas together to find the best communications system. 

We may be changing careers but we bring along all of the baggage from previous experiences so we want to be clear about our business and how it relates to who we will be as our own boss.
