NFC EAST BLOG by: Joey Bellmore

Going into the 11th week of the national football league season, the Dallas Cowboys(6-3) hold a one game lead over the Philadelphia Eagles(5-4) and New York Giants(5-4) in the NFC East. The Washington Redskins are currently last in the division with a record of 3-6. With seven games remaining, its safe to say that the NFC EAST is wide open. With the exception of the Redskins, but they are not out of it and are mathematically still alive. However, it appears as if its a three horse race between the Cowboys, Giants and Eagles.

    Dallas Cowboys(6-3)

Remaining Scedule: WSH, OAK, @ NYG, SD, @ NO, @ WSH, PHI.

Wade Phillips and the Cowboys have shown they can put points on the board. Untill they layed an egg in week 10 at Lambeau field against the Packers, Dallas was among the highest scoring offenses in the entire NFL. Scoring only seven points dropped their points per game to 24.9, which is good enough for 11th in the NFL. The Cowboys remaining schedule see's them face the Redskins twice and the lowly Raiders, and all three of these games likely equal Cowboy victories. However, games at Giants stadium and the superdome in New Orleans will present a tall task. The Chargers are red hot like they normally are every year at this time. When they visit Cowboys Stadium in week 14, Dallas better be ready for a tough game there aswell. They get the Eagles in week 17 in a game that might have serious playoff implications and could very well be the deciding game for the NFC EAST division championship.

Tony Romo has been performing well so far this season, minus a few bumps in the road. Romo has completed 183 passes for 2466 yards(60.4 comp.%). He's thrown for 14 TD's, 6 INT's, has a QB rating of 93.5 and has been sacked 22 times this season (2.2 per game). The Cowboys rank 8th in rush yards per game with 130/game. The three headed running attack of Marian Barber(4.6 yds/att, 4 TD's), Tashard Choice(4.9 yds/att, 3 TD's), and Felix Jones(6.9 yds/att, 1 TD) have provided Dallas with one of the most solid backfields in the NFL. Jason Witten has a favorite target of Romo's and has caught 49 passes averaging 8.9 yds/rec with just one TD. Ofcourse Witten's value goes far deeper than his offensive capabilities. He is a tough, intelligent player and an exceptional blocker. Miles Austin has burst onto the scene in big D, catching 31 balls for an average of 20.4 yards/rec with 7 TD's! Roy Williams hasn't had the most impressive run since he's been in the Dallas organization. Although he has come alive recently leading the Cowboys in recieving the last two games. Jerry Jones and the Cowboys paid a steep price for R. Williams trading away two first round picks for the wide-out, who has 24 catches and is averaging 17.9 yds/rec with 3 TD's. Patrick Crayton has similar stats with 26 catches averaging 16 yds/rec and has 2 TD's.

Defensive co-ordinator Brian Stewart has the Cowboys playing respectable D. Players like Keith Brooking(65 tackles, 2 sacks), Bradie James(65 tackles, 1 sack, 1 ff), Terrence Newman(48 tackles, 3 ff, 1 INT for a DTD), Demarcus Ware(35 tackles, 7 sacks, 2 ff) and Mike Jenkins(28 tackles, 3 INT's) have been the leaders pacing the Cowboys on the defensive end. Dallas ranks 7th in pts allowed/game at 18.8, 16th in yds allowed/game, their pass defense is ranked 18th(227.4 yds/game) with their rush defense being ranked 10th(103.1 yds/game). I like the Cowboys to go 5-2 down the stretch and finish with a record of 11-5.

    Philadelphia Eagles(5-4)

Remaining Schedule: @ CHI, WSH, @ ATL, @ NYG, SF, DEN, @ DAL.

When they are clicking the Eagles have a seriously potent air attack, and you can expect them to torch the opposing secondary. Their problem is their mediocre ground game. Phili is staring at a REALLY tough remaining schedule with 4 of the last 7 games on the road against solid teams @ CHI,@ ATL,@ NYG,@ DAL. The Bears, Redskins and Falcons appear to be the best chances for victories, but are definitely not going to be easy wins. Mike Singletary's 49er's have proven they can compete and Denver has fallen off a bit in recent weeks, but should still be a tough team down the stretch because of their defense and special teams. It does not look good for the Eagles, especially with the injury riddled Westbrook sitting on the sidelines. With that said the Eagles have proven the doubters wrong several times before and they will be in wildcard contantion at the least.

I think its safe to say that the Michael Vick experiment is a complete failure as the former pro bowler has completed just 2 passes for 6 yards this season. Donovan McNabb, who has ben sacked 19 times this year has 131 completions for 1685 yards(60.1 comp.%). He has thrown 12 TD's, 4 INT's and has a 95.1 QB rating. The key will be whther or not McNabb can remain healthy for the rest of the season and possibly a playoff run. The Eagles are averaging 26.9 points per game, which is good enough for a 5th overall ranking. They also rank 13th in yards per game(352.2 yds/game), and 9th in pass yards per game(250.1psyds/game). Tight end Brent Celek has been solid posting 46 receptions for 533 yards, averaging 11.6 yards per reception with 5 TD's. Second year stud Desean Jackson(34 rec, 621 rec yards, 18.3 yds/rec, 4 TD's) and Rookie Jeremy Maclin(31 rec, 413 yards, 13.3 yds/rec, 4 TD's) are both going to be solid playmakers for years to come in the NFL.

Phili's ground attack has been almost non existent so far this season. Ofcourse Brian Westbrook sitting on the sidlines doesn't help. The Eagles rank 23rd in the NFL with 102.3 rush yds/game. Rookie running back LeSean McCoy has been relied on to carry the bulk of the load in the backfield and has carried the ball 86 times for 353 yards, averaging 4.1 yds/attempt with 2 TD's. Sean McDermott took over the defensive co-ordinator duties with the passing of the late Jimmi Johnson coming into the season. They rank 14th in the NFL allowing 20.4 points per game, and 8th in yards allowed per game. In rush defense the Eagles are ranked 9th allowing 101.9 rush yards per game, and ranked 10th in pass yards allowed per game(205.6 psyds/game). Akeem Jordan(53 tackles, 1 sack, 2 INT's), Trent Cole(34 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 1 ff), Sheldon Brown(25 tackles, 4 INT's) and Asante Samuel(24 tackles, 1 ff, 5 INT's) have paced he Eagles defense. With the injuries and lack of a consistent ground threat, the Eagles chances don't look promising, but thats why we play the games because you just have to be the best team on a given day/night. I got the Eagles going 4-3 down the stretch and finishing with a record of 9-7.

    New York Giants(5-4)

Remaining Schedule: ATL, @ DEN, DAL, PHI, @ WSH, CAR, @ MIN.

The G-Men started the season well winning 5 straight and then lost their last 4 games in a row. Coach Tom Coughlin and the Giants are reeling right now, but its not as bad as it looks. The Saints, Eagles, Cardinals and Chargers are all solid squads and are capable of beating anyone in the league. But still, losing 4 straight isn't good for their chances in a tough NFC EAST division. They will look to stop the bleeding in week 11 when they host Atlanta at Giants Stadium. The Falcons are a desperate team looking to remain in wild card contention and will be a real test for the G-Men. Denver has been among the best defenses in the league for the most part thanks to guys like Elvis Dumerville, Brian Dawkins and Champ Bailey, but their offense isn't as well tooled as the G-men offense. The broncos game is a winnable one for the Giants, along with the game against the Redskins. But the New York Football Giants will have to pull up their socks and pick up their level of play or they'll be hard pressed to remain in contention in the NFC EAST or a wild card.

Eli Manning already has 8 INT's this season. Eli has completed 165 passes for 2070 yards(60 comp.%) with 15 TD's and a QB rating of 89.5. The Giants are averaging 25.8 pts/game ranking 8th, and they rank 5th in yards per game(377.7 yds/game). The passing attack is ranked 15th averaging 238.8 pass yards per game. Steve smith(61 rec, 719 yards, 11.8 yds/rec, 5 TD's) has been the most consistent recieving threat for Eli Manning. Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks both have 4 receiving TD's respectively. The run game for the Giants has been strong for the most part with a 7th overall rushing yards per game ranking averaging 138.9 rshyds/game. Ahmad Bradshaw(103 carries, 515 yards, 5 yds/att, 4 TD's) and Brandon Jacobs(151 carries, 617 yards, 4.1 yds/att, 2 TD's) form a nice ground tandem for New York. Kevin Boss has been playing well at the tight end position averaging 14.9 yds/rec with 2 TD's.

The Giants rank 1st in yards against allowing 274.4 yds/game, and rank 2nd in pass defense allowing just 168 psyds/game. The rush defense has been respectable ranking 13th allowing an average of 106.4 rshyds/game. Unfortunately, the G-men are ranked 21st in points allowed per game(22.7 pts/game). The Giants are always a solid defensive team thanks to the likes of Antonio Pierce(55 tackles, 1 sack, 1 ff), Osi Umenyiora(19 tackles, 5 sacks, 3 ff), CC Brown(44 tackles, 3 ff), Terrell Thomas(41 tackles, 1 sack, 1 ff, 3 INT's), Bruce Johnson(19 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT brought back for DTD) and Justin Tuck(28 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 3 ff). Looking at the remaining schedule for the G-men, it is realistic to believe that they will go 5-2 in their last seven games to finish with a record of 10-6.

    Washington Redskins(3-6)

Remaining Schedule: @ DAL, @ PHI, NO, @ OAK, NYG, DAL, @ SD.

Coach Jim Zorn and the Redskins are having a very dissappointing season so far sitting in the basement of the NFC EAST with a record of 3-6. Tight End Chris Cooley and Running Back Clinton Portis are integral parts of the Washington Offense and both are out indefinitely due to injury. This isn't a happy time for Redskin fans. With a seriously tough remaining schedule, the Redskins could be in line for a high draft pic in next years draft. Infact the only game I see them winning down the stretchis when they travel to California to play the Oakland Raiders and the developmentally challenged Jamarcus Russell. Is is safe to call this guy a Bust yet? Other than that game the Skins will be in tough for wins down the stretch.

The Skins are ranked 29th in points scored per game averaging 15.6 ppg and ranked 24th in yards allowed per game. Washington is almost as terrible in passing yards per game ranking 20th averaging 200.9 psyds/game, and just as bad in rush yards per game with 107.1 rshyds/game. Jason Campbell has been sacked 28 times already this season and hasn't recieved any protection from his "O" line. Campbell has almost as many INT's(8) as TD's(10), and has 168 completions for 1870 yards(66.1 comp.%) with a QB rating of 87.9. Santana Moss is the teams top receiving threat and has 35 receptions for 508 yards averaging 14.5 yds/rec with 2 TD's. Tight End Chris Cooley had 29 receptions for 332 yards averaging 11.4 yds/rec with 2 TD's before going down with injury. The teams top running back Clinton Portis who is out indefinitely due to injury had 124 rushing attempts for 494 yards averaging 4 yds per carry with 1 TD before he went down. The Skins are expected to use a three headed attack in regards to their ground game with ladell betts, Rock Cartwright and Quinton Ganther expected to share the rushing duties.

Aside from a terrible rush defense that is ranked 24th allowing 125.7 rshyds/game. The Skins aren't bad defensively. They rank 1st in pass defense allowing just 162.7 psyds/game. The Skins are 5th in yards allowed per game alowing an average of 288.3 yds/game and ranked 8th in points allowed per game at 19.0 pts/game. its unrealistic to think the skins can compete with the other three teams in the NFC EAST or even a wild card birth for that matter. I can't see the Redskins winning more than 2 of their last seven games and finishing with a record of 5-11.

So based on my analysis, which can be distorted at times. Here is how I think the NFC EAST picture will look at the end of the regular season.

    Dallas Cowboys 11-5

    New York Giants 10-6

    Philadelphia Eagles 9-7

    Washington Redskins 5-11

    The Future of Larry Johnson

After clearing waivers earlier this week, Larry Johnson is now a free agent available to sign with any team! The Chiefs waived Johnson last week after a suspension for using derogatory homosexual slurs on Twitter and to the Kansas City media in which he ripped the coaching staff.  The unfortunate turn of events ended LJ's seven year tenure with the Chiefs, Which might not turn out to be so bad for LJ. It is most likely that he'll end up with a team that has a legitimate shot at the playoffs.

Early in his career LJ encountered problems finding himself in coach Dick Vermeil’s doghouse. Vermeil said he needed to “take the diapers off.”  Johnson then went on to have two Pro Bowl seasons before landing a monster contract prior to the 2007 season.  His play dropped off after that, and he was suspended by the commissioner in 2008 due to off-the-field incidents. Now, in 2009, Johnson has struck again.   His most recent antics were his last in a Chiefs uniform and now he is currently unemployed after clearing waivers.

I will say this: If LJ can shut the #$%@ up and finally realize how to be a professional, he can still be a very serviceable back-up in the NFL even at the age of 30. All be it only for a couple more years at best, but it what it is. It would take a good head coach who has a previous track record of successfully dealing with big egos.  Bill Belichik? The Patriots are notorious for taking in "bad boys" and profiting from it.  Remember Corey Dillon?  How about Randy Moss? there are other players aswell.

CBS sports reported that LJ wants to sign with the Steelers, but the backfield is simply too full.  Rashard Mendenhall has been great as a starter and they don’t even have enough carries for Willie Parker.  There have been conflicting reports on the Texans interest in Johnson, some saying Houston is his most likely landing spot while others saying the Texans are completely out of the running. Since the Edgerin James experiment was a failure as Seattle released him last week,  The Seahawks could use a solid back-up to share carries with julius Jones, who hasn't exactly been lighting it up this season.

Matt Forte is entrenched as the starter in Chicago, but there is little behind him.  Kevin Jones went down with injury right before the season started and just this past week Garret Wolfe goes down and will miss a few weeks. The Bears are in a bit of a slump at this point in time and adding Johnson could give them the spark they need to get back in the playoff picture.  Another destination could be in Wasington with recent injury to Clinton Portis.  I sure wouldn't put it past Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders, would not be surprised at all if they signed him. But that is all purely speculation at this point.

Does he come with too much baggage? Will he be a cancer in the locker room? He is 30, the dreaded age for running backs.  A team could probably pick him up for cheap and he might straighten the @#$% up if he realized he had legitimate chance at a playoff run.  Its also very possible that no teams are willing to take the chance on LJ. It will sure be intersting to see if he gets another shot to be part of NFL team or not.  If not he is still being paid because the Chiefs are on the hook for the remainder of his contract. Johnson could always try the CFL?

    AFC WEST Blog

The San Diego Chargers have renewed life in the AFC WEST. It looked as if the Denver Broncos were going to run away with the division starting the season with six straight wins. Especially, with the victory earlier this season when they went into San Diego and defeated the Chargers 34-23. Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels has really got Denver playing some solid football, most noteably on the defensive end, where they rank among the top defenses in the NFL.

Norv Turner and the Chargers have won three in a row, with a quality win over the NY Giants last week. The three game win streak has them right back into contention for the AFC West title, as they find themselves just one game back of Denver. San Diego travels to the mile high city on November 22nd to face the Broncos in a key game that just might decide the AFC west. The Chargers will need to win this game if they intend on overtaking the top spot in the division.

The time is now for Norv Turner and the Chargers, as their window of opportunity is closing fast. Ladanian Tomlinson hasn't rushed for 100 yards in a game yet this season, and has been riddled with injuries dating back to last season. At 30 years of age, his best days are likely behind him. it'll be interesting to see if LT can rebound and be a contributor down the stretch. He hasn't been happy lately with the situation in Charger nation, and rumors are circulating that the Chargers might release him after the season. It wouldn't make sense for them to overpay for a player who's clearly declining for the amount of money a guy like LT will expect. It would be a different story if he was still performing at an elite level, but that is certainly not the case here. With that said I still like The San Diego Chargers to win the dog fight for the AFC west crown.

    Michael Vick

Could Michael Vick be a Buffalo Bill in the not so distant future? It would certainly appear possible, if you listen to the rumors circulating in the media recently. He hasn't done ANYTHING for the Eagles this year, but give the man some time to get back into game shape. The biggest question in regards to Vick is not who he will play for, its whether or not he can even play at all anymore? Can he return to that elite talent he was a few years back? Lord knows his body was well preserved from the beating of an NFL season, and gangster lifestyle for a couple years, unless "bubba" had his way in the shower or prison cell? He is only 29, which isn't that old for the QB position. If Vick were put in a situation where he could be the number one QB for next season, I believe he would be able to put out another good year or two. With proper exercise and diet, anything is possible I guess. But the clock is ticking fast for him.

Well, insert the Mediocre buffalo bills to the scenario. The Bills are terribly inconsistent, and desperately need to sell more tickets! But what about their QB situation? Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick are not exactly studs. Bringing Vick to buffalo is definitely justifiable, probably more justifiable than any other team in the league at this point in time. The Bills would sell much more tickets with Vick as their starter, at first anyway. Ofcourse he would have to prove that he still belongs in the league by performing on the field, and whether or not he is able to do that still remains to be seen. However, I believe that he could if given the opportunity. Does that mean I think the Bills would be a contender with Vick?
F$%# NO! The franchise would just make more money. period. The problem might be the contract negotiations.

My point is that the former Virginia Tech Hokie is a justifiable option for the Buffalo Bills, whose troubles go much deeper than their horrible QB situation. With names like Terrell owens and michael Vick, obviously ticket sales would go up. Sure the names sell more tickets, but that might be all they do. Another place Vick might be best suited for at this point in his career is the CFL!
