After clearing waivers earlier this week, Larry Johnson is now a free agent available to sign with any team! The Chiefs waived Johnson last week after a suspension for using derogatory homosexual slurs on Twitter and to the Kansas City media in which he ripped the coaching staff. The unfortunate turn of events ended LJ's seven year tenure with the Chiefs, Which might not turn out to be so bad for LJ. It is most likely that he'll end up with a team that has a legitimate shot at the playoffs.
Early in his career LJ encountered problems finding himself in coach Dick Vermeil’s doghouse. Vermeil said he needed to “take the diapers off.” Johnson then went on to have two Pro Bowl seasons before landing a monster contract prior to the 2007 season. His play dropped off after that, and he was suspended by the commissioner in 2008 due to off-the-field incidents. Now, in 2009, Johnson has struck again. His most recent antics were his last in a Chiefs uniform and now he is currently unemployed after clearing waivers.
I will say this: If LJ can shut the #$%@ up and finally realize how to be a professional, he can still be a very serviceable back-up in the NFL even at the age of 30. All be it only for a couple more years at best, but it what it is. It would take a good head coach who has a previous track record of successfully dealing with big egos. Bill Belichik? The Patriots are notorious for taking in "bad boys" and profiting from it. Remember Corey Dillon? How about Randy Moss? there are other players aswell.
CBS sports reported that LJ wants to sign with the Steelers, but the backfield is simply too full. Rashard Mendenhall has been great as a starter and they don’t even have enough carries for Willie Parker. There have been conflicting reports on the Texans interest in Johnson, some saying Houston is his most likely landing spot while others saying the Texans are completely out of the running. Since the Edgerin James experiment was a failure as Seattle released him last week, The Seahawks could use a solid back-up to share carries with julius Jones, who hasn't exactly been lighting it up this season.
Matt Forte is entrenched as the starter in Chicago, but there is little behind him. Kevin Jones went down with injury right before the season started and just this past week Garret Wolfe goes down and will miss a few weeks. The Bears are in a bit of a slump at this point in time and adding Johnson could give them the spark they need to get back in the playoff picture. Another destination could be in Wasington with recent injury to Clinton Portis. I sure wouldn't put it past Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders, would not be surprised at all if they signed him. But that is all purely speculation at this point.
Does he come with too much baggage? Will he be a cancer in the locker room? He is 30, the dreaded age for running backs. A team could probably pick him up for cheap and he might straighten the @#$% up if he realized he had legitimate chance at a playoff run. Its also very possible that no teams are willing to take the chance on LJ. It will sure be intersting to see if he gets another shot to be part of NFL team or not. If not he is still being paid because the Chiefs are on the hook for the remainder of his contract. Johnson could always try the CFL?
