Wow, I thought today's interview with Del Hamilton and Ismail ibn Conner of 7 Stages Theatre would serve to simply tell us more about their upcoming season and on-going projects. However, we all received a history lesson - from the KKK demonstraton in 1980's Atlanta, a French lesson centered on playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès, and the origins of the name "7 Stages" - it was a great time!

    WHERE ATLANTA MEETS THE WORLD

Meet Leslie Gordon, Executive & Artistic Director, on
ATL Conversations - Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 6:30p.m. for an insiders preview of the season.

Georgia State University’s Rialto Center for the Arts 2009-10 Rialto Series features the best jazz, world music, and dance, including remarkable performers never before seen in Atlanta.

With performance-related events featuring local artists and scholars, in-depth master classes, thought-provoking talks, and more, patrons will find that each and every evening of the Rialto’s upcoming season promises to be much more than a show - it's an experience!

The upcoming Rialto Series, in collaboration with the National Black Arts Festival, opens with an event unlike any other — the Can’t, Don’t, Won’t Stop Theater Festival, a full weekend of remarkable spoken-word and theatrical performances. Other season highlights include the artistry of chanteuse Dee Dee Bridgewater, political pranksters Capitol Steps, poetry in motion of dance greats like The Trey McIntyre Project and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, and the legendary Latin Jazz rhythms of Eddie Palmieri. The Rialto, Atlanta’s “Best World Music Venue,” will also welcome Mexico’s Los Cenzontles, Spain’s Paco Peña, Israel’s Idan Raichel Project, India’s Zakir Hussain & Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, and the altogether unexpected but wholly satisfying collaboration, Béla Fleck: The Africa Project — a collaboration of world-famous banjo player Fleck and musicians from throughout the African continent.

“The upcoming season features more than a dozen only-at-the-Rialto performances that will challenge, satisfy, uplift, and inspire,” says Leslie Gordon, director. “Each night of the 2009-2010 season is truly an invitation to experience the world.”

Series subscriptions are on sale now with single tickets going on sale Wednesday, September 2, 2009. Tickets may be purchased by calling 404-413-9TIX (9849), in person at the Box Office, by fax at 404-413-9850, or online at www.rialtocenter.org.

Fine Art - From Atlanta to Italy!

Art appreciation is a highly personal thing. Lucky for us, Atlanta's art scene is so diverse, there is truly something for everyone! Log onto ATL Conversations this evening at 6:30pm and chat with us live as we discuss and appreciate art with the founders of the Frank Ski Kids Foundation and fine artist Stacey Brown.

From the ruins of the Roman Empire to Michelangelo’s iconic statue of David, for thousands of years Italy has been at the forefront of Western culture. This summer, a select group of budding young artists won the opportunity to see many of the celebrated historical treasures they’ve read about in school and that have been preserved in the finest Italian art museums.

Frank Ski, a top-rated morning show at Atlanta-based radio station V-103 (CBS affiliate), and his wife Tanya Rodriguez recently took ten local students on an International Art Excursion to Florence, Italy. This is the latest in a number of educational excursions developed by the foundation to help sharpen young minds and give them the tools to develop and explore areas of interest, including science and the arts. With decreasing arts budgets in schools, the Frank Ski Kids Foundation has made art education a vital part of programming. For more information, visit www.frankskikids.org.

    About Ken Ford

Ken Ford is one of today’s most gifted musical performers in the entertainment arena. His years of performing in Atlanta jam sessions and events acquired a massive fan-base that sparked media attention and interest from promoters both nationally and internationally. He continues to draw a diverse group of music lovers to his performances and leaves his fans in awe, jumping out of their seats and moving to the funky sounds of the electric violin.

Ken's unwavering dedication to perfecting his craft has rewarded him with a solid and accomplished career, sharing the stage with some of contemporary jazz, soul and R&B greats such as Ledisi, Wayman Tisdale, Wyclef Jean, Jill Scott, and Lalah Hathaway. Never to be placed in a categorical box, the classically-trained musician mesmerizes audiences with his unique ability to master all genres of mainstream music as an electrifying instrumentalist. With three successful albums under his belt--his first release, BURNT TOAST; his sophomore release, CHEVELLE LANE; and his current release, RIGHT NOW, Ken continues to top the charts.

In addition to creating unique music and entertaining music lovers worldwide, Ken is the founder of The Ken Ford Foundation, giving back to young people through keeping music education in schools, with a focus on stringed instruments; and partnering with national charities to ensure an appreciation of music for generations to come. Ken hopes to inspire youth to think the word "cool" in association with stringed instruments, especially the violin.
