    National Black Arts Festival 2009

    July 29 - August 2

Only in Atlanta. Only at the National Black Arts Festival.

The National Black Arts Festival (NBAF), a non-profit cultural institution based in Atlanta, Georgia, celebrates the contributions of people of African descent and their impact on world cultures.

The mission of NBAF is to engage and educate diverse audiences about the arts and culture of the African Diaspora and provide opportunities for artistic and
    creative expression.

This global celebration encompasses music, film, literary and gala experiences that blend the sights, sounds, words, flavors and excitement of the African Diaspora. Join us for five fun days of films, music, workshops, and conversations at the Woodruff Arts Center.

Festival highlights include the International Marketplace, July 31st through August 2nd with artists and vendors from around the world; a Literary Salon and workshops covering everything from collecting jazz to writing screenplays; the signature Legends Celebration which this year will pay homage to Nina Simone and feature performances from Diane Reeves, Liz Wright, Lisa Simone Kelly and Joi; Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn; and Jazz Around Town with Rio Negro and Kathleen Bertrand.

The Pan African Film Festival, America's largest and most prestigious Black Film Festival, is a highly anticipated feature of NBAF. It will showcase over 150 new black movies and 100 fine artists from the US, Africa, the Caribbean, South America, the South Pacific, Europe and Canada. Opening night of the film festival is July 30th and features actor, filmmaker and producer Robert Townsend.

Tune in to ATL Conversations on Tuesday, July 21st at 6:30p.m. to meet Leatrice Ellzy, Director of Artistic Programming and New Technologies for NBAF, for the behind-the-scenes scoop on festival events and to learn what it takes to pull off one of the leading arts festivals in the country.
