For many Americans the name “Fallujah” conjures up images of war at its worst. An ancient city located 40 miles west of Baghdad , Fallujah was the scene of two horrific battles in 2004, both of which pitted U.S. troops against Muslim extremists from around the world. Second Fallujah (Operation Phantom Fury) raged for seven weeks, and was the largest urban battle since Hue City in Vietnam . According to author Richard S. Lowry, what many Americans don’t understand is that this epic bloodbath marked a significant turning point in the Iraq War, when the U.S. troops overcame tremendous odds to win the decisive battle of the war.
