Another black man shot to death, with the police still investigating. The pattern remains the same, but we all stand and watch. When the report comes on the screen, we shake our heads, write down the address of where to send the flowers, and attend the funeral as if the cycle is normal. Sadly, it has become a norm among African-Americans to attend the funerals of young, black men, the ones that could have accomplished anything they put their minds to if they had been given a little more guidance, a little more attention, or possibly a little more love. We are failing as a whole. African-Americans must take action and consider it our personal responsibilities to close the gaps in our communities. If there is a child going in the wrong direction, whether the child has parents or not, get involved. Single parents aim feverishly to try to provide all the fundamentals their children need, but balancing jobs, paying bills, and raising a child alone are battles within themselves, not including the overtime required to make ends meet, the lack of money to pay the energy bill, and the child who acts out because he or she is incapable of articulating the emptiness felt inside.
