    Money and You in 2009

It is a new year.  I am remembering all of the money saving tips my mom told me, great aunts and the like.  I am saving change (really saving).  Putting 10% of what I earn away, not going into a panic (stayed in the stock market with a money market and 401 K) and cutting cost wherever I can.

This is the time to be smart about your money.  Do not take any chances.  If you are working (especially if you are 50+) make your self indispensable at work.  Find at least two other ways to make money and save a minimum of 10% of your income bi-weekly, monthly or however you get paid.

Find ways to go green in your home.  Do not waste any energy.  Change the light bulbs to those new low fluorescent ones.  If you have a room you are not using don't heat it or cool it.  Pay those utility bills on time at all cost. You do not want to pay the extra charge for being late.

Start a food co-op or join one.  If your household is small share with another small household. You will see the savings.  My husband and I manage a small food co-op and we have seen the savings in our food bill.  We do not buy produce at the grocery store go to the farmers market of the food co-op.  If you live in metro Atlanta beginning in February Maidah:  Atlanta Food Consortium will stock at least two vegetables on a regular basis.  Our prices will be much lower than Kroger or any grocery store. Come by and see.

If you drive to work please carpool.  Check your tires make sure they are inflated properly, get a tune up when you are suppose to, etc.  Use public transportation as much as you can.  Stay healthy.  Go for a walk three or four times per week, ride a bike, etc.  Take your lunch to work.

Having an energy audit (most of the time it is free) by the local utility companies is a good thing to do.  You will find out if you are paying to much on your utilities due to not having your home properly insulated, etc.

Recycle! I am recycling aluminum, tin and electronics for a non-profit I am associated with and it is helping.  You will be surprise how many people have cell phones, iPods, etc. lying around collecting dust.  Ask your friends, family and co-worker for those items and turn them in for cash.  Email haleem1@aol.com or call me at (404) 608-8649 if you have an old cell phone you are not using (working and/or broken), empty ink jet cartridge, empty toner pack, laptop computer, mp3 player, digital computer or digital video recorder.

Also call or email if your company is throwing ink jet cartridges or toner packs in the trash.  We can take those items and turn them in to be properly disposed of so they don't wind up polluting our streams.

A new tip that works.  Get a water filter and put it on your kitchen sink at least (you may want to do this in other areas as well). Stop buying bottled water.  Get glass containers instead wash them in hot water with a low sudsing detergent and fill them up and put them in your refrigerator instead.

You will see how much you save on buying bottled water.

Just a few tips to help us stay ahead of the money crunch in 2009.
