Domestic Violence Awareness, Prevention, Intervention and Advocacy
Date / Time: 10/22/2007 10:03 PM UTC
Ella's Daughters a group of women activist who have fashioned a national movement after the late Ella Baker (visit ellasdaughters.org for more details) have announced and are rallying support of women of color around the nation to wear RED the color of life and reclamation on October 31. Many women will go to places where violence has occured against women, others will go to local churches and other places of worship and some will take to the streets. In collaboration with this effort the Baitul Salaam Network, Inc. national domestic violence awareness organization located in metro Atlanta has invited women from all over the city to come to Masjid Al Mu minun to pray at two of the five daily congregational prayer times. One is at 4:20 pm Salatul Asr and the other is at 6:20 pm Salatul Maghrib. The goal is to show that women can take up their own causes when national leaders and the media do not choose to highlight or bring awareness to incidents of violence against women of color (especially African American women). The two incidents of violence that have served as a catalyst for this national protest are:Women ganged raped and one forced to perform oral sex on her child in the Dunbar Village Housing Projects in Florida and Megan Williams who was held captive, raped and tortured by a family of white people in WVA for just under a month. The lack of any national leader taking up the challenge, lack of media coverage, the overall apathy of the local police and others concerning these two incidents is alarming. Why is it that these two cases are not receiving adequate news coverage? Why hasn't any national leader step forth to assist these women?See you at Masjid Al Mu minun, 1127 Hank Aaron Dr. SW, Wednesday, October 31 at 4:20 pm and/or at 6:20 pm. We will pray and leave. There will be no formal program. Don't forget to wear red. If you have any questions call Sr. Hadayai at (404) 366-6610.
