In the early 1900s much travelled author; Ella Wheeler Wilcox described Jamaica as: “an incomparable combination of American Comfort, English cleanliness, Italian climate and the opulence of Nature’s best gifts.”(Dr. Rebecca Tortello; Pieces of the Past) The Great Exhibition of 1891- Jamaica on Show, created a need to accommodate the expected foreign visitors and initiated the building of the first group of hotels in and around Kingston. Join us in the Backyard as we go back in time to Jamaica’s Golden Age and the birth of “Tourism”. This week's labrish will share interesting facts about the events, the people and the politics of back in the days. Over time, events, people and politics have changed however, the Island remains: “A Postcard from Paradise”. Come join the labrish!
