Spliting the protest vote

Will Incumbents retain their seats by splitting the protest vote? will the DNC and the RNC support independents in the state where there incumbent have a large number of protest voters? in order to split the vote and retain their seats? If 60 votes in senate is filibuster proof how can the democrats have a super-er senate? What chance do we take by voting independent?
