Janie Suss, author of Oscar and Olive Osprey: A Family Takes Flight. Janie has always been fascinated by the wildlife in her area, particularly ospreys. She built a platform at the end of her pier and sure enough, a family of birds settled in. The father bird, Oscar, reminded her of her dad, a WWII veteran who worked his way through law school. Oscar’s mate Olive mirrored Janie’s mother, the woman who not only raised 11 children, but who also owned her own beauty shop and worked full time to ensure the best for her flock. Inspired by the parallels, Janie wrote a children’s book about the importance of families. With real photographs of her birds, she shows how each member of the families plays their part. This book also reminds children to look beyond TV sets and computer screens to the lessons that can be learned from nature.
