A full on attention grabber from the start, Rodriguez spins his debut in endearing prose, his plot exciting, inventive and wholly convincing in its implementation, with plenty of unpredicted twists and turns along the way. Undeniably, a story about friendship, his young protagonists are ably observed with well-crafted personas which allow room for growth as their peril evolves. It’s a splendid telling that will certainly engage the imaginations of his young readers. There’s suspense, plenty of tension and gratifyingly dark overtures which children will lap up, but it never feels rushed with every chapter leaving the reader hungry for more. On cursory reflection it is simply a cracking story, but the thematic undertones reflect the loss of innocence and the fundamental issue of survival which would be invaluable for parent-child discussion.
