    Kristina Chew is an autism mom guiding her son to embrace his neurodiversity

    Kristina Chew describes her first act of autism advocacy as she recalls her husband's words the day she told him that their son Charlie had autism, "Are they going to take him away from us?" he asked. Kristina's immediate response was, "no." That was in the winter of 1999, and Kristina would eventually come to describe their life in this way, "...while life raising Charlie is not easy, we know that our life has been better because of him." Kristina joined us for an inspirational and educational show as she shared with us her family's ongoing journey through the world of autism. This encompassed various stages which has led Kristina's family toward acceptance, action, and advocacy.

    Dr. Tony Attwood

    Professor Attwood joined us for a discussion about his latest book, Asperger's and Girls, his affiliation with FAAAS, and his explanation of the Cassandra Affective Deprivation Disorder (CAAD). Dr Attwood is a best selling author, a practicing psychologist for more than 25 years, and a leading authority re: Asperger's Syndrome. Dr. Attwood was joined by Ari Ne'eman of ASAN for a few minutes at the close of his interview. Ari & Dr. Attwood publicly spoke to one another for the first time since the recent controversy over Dr. Attwood's affiliation with FAAAS.

    Life as an Adult on the Autism Spectrum and Cultural Stigmas

    Sandy Yim is a 28 year old female on the spectrum who was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome when she was in the 2nd grade. Sandy was an inner city teacher until 2008 and was deeply passionate about her role as an urban educator; however, she decided that it was time to turn her focus toward something that was a better match as it pertains to her personal health needs and ASD issues. Sandy has since then been blogging about adult life with Asperger's Syndrome. She is currently developing what she envisions as an illustrated guide to job skills for Aspies which will be a combination of writings and illustrations by individuals on the spectrum. As an Asian-American, Sandy has observed the stigma which is sometimes associated with an autism diagnosis within her native community. She shared with us how this has affected her personally as well as her Asian-American family and friends.

    Michael John Carley, Executive Director of GRASP and author of "Asperger's from the Inside Out" was our guest, and he shared with us the mission of GRASP as it pertains to community outreach, peer supports, education, and advocacy. Michael also helped us to appreciate the goals and vision of GRASP within the autism community. Michael explained various topic points and descriptions of chapters found in his book, "Asperger's From the Inside Out: A Supportive and Practical Guide for Anyone with Asperger's Syndrome" which was released in April, 2008.
