Vanessa and Kobe Bryant reached a settlement in their divorce earlier this week. She will receive three Southern California mansions and $75 million in cash. Folks are UPSET that Kobe's wife of ten years should get that kind of money when she hasn't done anything but "pop out babies" and "get her hair and nails done." The loudest complaints are coming from the Black community, with comparisons being made about Vanessa's race, as was done about Elin Woods. Basically, the angry voices are saying that if these women were Black, they would never have received such generous and quick settlement offers. Let's talk about this case and the many others involving wealthy men and their divorces. Is there a difference in how we perceive the value of the marriage and of his wife if a man is poor vs. if he is wealthy? Is there a difference in how we perceive the value of the wife's services if she is Black vs. non-black? Has marriage outlived its usefulness for women except as a method of capital gains?
