As you can tell by my pic I am a dark brotha, 6’5”, not that I’m conscious about it but I love being tall and by my own admission, with fairly decent looks. LOl. But I can remember a time when a brotha like me couldn't get any play because I was too dark. The light skinned brotha's had it made. Cat's like El and Chico Debarge, Al B Sure, Keith Washington, and even that midget Prince was the BOMB! Then around the early 90's the tide started turning to my side of the spectrum and female's started digging dark brotha's. Cat's like Wesley Snipes, Morris Chestnut, Leon, the brotha from Amistad ( can’t think of his name at the moment) and Idris ElbA hit the scene and the light skinned cats started getting treated like the red headed step child with halitosis. (That’s’ bad breath for those who didn’t know) Then BAM!! All of a sudden the light skinned brotha was out of style. What happened? Help me try to figure it out. I decided to do a show on Black Family Reunions and Holidays because I think family is the most important aspect of life we have under God. Not that I have to quantify this but I chose black families simply because that’s where my perspective is from and nothing else. Everyone has had that crazy drunk Uncle that acts a fool at the reunion, or that fast Auntee who’s kinda fine and flirty but you can’t mess with her cause she’s family. That's right I said Auntee not Aunt. And nobody will do you like family will and that's speaking from a good and bad standpoint. Y'all know what I'm talking bout. One Christmas my sister gave out Christmas gifts to the family which was the stuff she had borrowed from us throughout the year and never returned. Another year I had an Aunt make everyone get it two lines in which she wrote us checks for $10 each in the first line, then she cashed the same checks in the second line. Everybody's got stories like that from holidays and family reunions so call in or email your reunions or holiday stories to the show. Think back to last year and Prop 8 in CA that said it would no longer recognize same-sex marriages as valid. There are several dynamics to this controversial topic that I would like to discuss. Is same-sex marriage a moral or legal issue? If moral, why should the courts be involved? If legal, how much control or regulation should the courts have? Is it just a matter of ethics? As a straight person, should I be concerned? How will same-sex marriage affect society? Should the traditional concept and the same-sex concept of marriage be taught in public schools? And point blank; why is it such a big deal? I chose this topic not because of its controversial nature but rather to find out what everyday people like you and me think about same-sex marriage. This is not a show to bash homosexuality or persuade one’s opinion for or against. My hope is to provoke intelligent and mature conversation about a topic that people feel strongly about and has been the focal point of human rights for a very long time. And then you ask yourself, “What the french toast am I doing here?” To add insult to injury, a very sweet innocent looking young female student puts her hand on your shoulder and says, “You’ll be ok honey, my grandmother is thinking about going back to school too and she’s about your age.” Just as your brain fired the muscle impulse to jump up and slap the taste out of her mouth the professor walks in and you’re jolted back to reality. All the while thinking “I’ll get that little heffa later”. That may be exaggerating a bit, but the reality is that more and more older Americans are going back to school. Is it the economy, career change, their current job requires that they have a degree, or is it just personal satisfaction? Likewise, the woman’s role was to cook, clean and pop out babies. To some extent, there are those who continue to live by that philosophy, but more recent generations would argue that that way of thinking is old fashioned and out dated. Should there be such a thing as gender roles? If so, how do we define them? If not, how do we determine who’s responsible for what? What role if any does gender roles play in how the courts divide assets in domestic and marital issues? Sad but true. What makes a person reach that point? Do they show warning signs that co-workers disregard? And how can it be prevented? In most cases there was some sort of conflict in the workplace that didn’t get resolved which lead to that employee catching a case of the “crazies”. This show will focus on those types of issues in the workplace. We often dread going to work because of conflicts and problems we have with co-workers, supervisors or associates within the workplace. So what do we do? Avoid those people, talk about those people like a dog, or like some of us have done, slap those people or do something worse instead of trying to resolve the problem before we reach the proverbial breaking point? Also, sexual harassment is taken seriously within corporate America and companies take severe measures in dealing with accusations of sexual harassment including filing criminal charges. So what should be done when a person falsely accuses someone of sexual harassment? What things can we do to educate employees about sexual harassment and is it confined to just the work place? Lastly, we will discuss relationships in the work place between supervisors and employees. I know, I know; there can be a lot of baggage associated with an office romance but is it worth it? We’ll also discuss issues with having a member of the opposite sex as a supervisor, the intimidation factor between employees and supervisors and the problems they may cause. It’s a full show so email your questions or comments to ask@kimpsonenterprises.com or call me at (347) 826-9214 during the show and give your two cents. I know some of ya’ll got about 75 cents but its all good.
