Arthur Freds On Air

'Arthur Freds On Air' focuses on what is popularly known as ABA MUSIC. There is a high demand for this piece. When we say ABA Music, we mean the music made by musicians based in Aba during an era that spans 1970 to 1980. The above ten-year period is crucial as a lot of musical work done in it related to and mirrored British and American Music at that same period. My bands and I memorized several Motown songs and performed them on stage. We also worked on songs of that era but from other labels than Motown. Music from the succeeding period may be treated in this program as they become applicable.

    Original Air Date:

    Listen To The Music Again

Songs that have veen played ont his program are very touching. Sometimes we get carrieed away in talking about the artists. Right here, right now we play the songs again. Take a listen!

    Barry Starrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

    ABA Music no. 1 drummer

  • Original Air Date:

    Barry Starrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!

Barry remains an enigma of the drums set. He has been called "Elemarangwa", a name that only few people will understand. Barry's journey through the music stage can only be told by him. Incidentally, people find it difficult to talk about themselves. In this broadcast, we have insisted on getting Barry to answer our questions. Through that process, we hope to talk extensively about Barry (and with him in the radio station here)!

    Roll Call

ABA Musicians Roll Call features the who is who. Those who currently live and play music in Aba; those who lived and played music in Aba, but currently live in other cities or countries; and those whose names are iconic as per Aba music whether or not they live or lived in Aba. This roll call is definitely inconclusive because the roll is inexhaustible.

    The Vibrations

The solo power of Tex Soul, Vibrations is a well pronounced band in Aba. Tex Soul operated from the East side of Aba. Tex Soul was the band leader and a one-man guitar session. His rhythm sessions are massive. His lead guitar solos are very uniquely melorious. This band was unique in the sense that the band actually belonged to Tex Soul. Every member of the band was his employee. The band was good and vibrant. Tex Soul took the center front stage. He was fond of BB King's "Supernatural". His hit songs included "You'll Make It Someday" and "I Don't Know What To Do". Tex Soul had raw energy. He was always able to pick up the loud speakers and haul them on to the bus or pickup truck. Tex Soul's rehearsals always took place at his Hospital Road band base. His beautiful wife and very handsome son were always in the loop. You will hear on the broadcast what happened the day we were in the recording studio for Vibration's first album. Goddy Odiik was in the center of that unforgettable event. Beni Tudumey of The Frimmen Music Company traveled with us to the studio, and came to the rescue on that day! Don't forget the song, "Gypsy Boy"!!!!!!!

    Sweet Unit Rock Group

This is another authentic ABA based group. The Friimen Music Company was in Lagos recording in Decca Studios at Abuje-Oja in Akoka-Lagos. A group of musicians heard that Aba musicians were in the studio. They trooped in and saw us. At that point, they told us that they were intending to return to Aba to form a band. They also saw that The Friimen had a keyboardist, but that I was an keyboards attache to Beni Tudumey. They spoke to me to join them to form the band upon their return to Aba in the following couple of months. I was hesitant. They approached Beni Tudumey to speak to me. Beni did. Though I did not agree to form the band with them. They truly return to Aba in the new year, came to our rehearsal ground behind Ngwa Road near Ibere Street. Beni encouraged me to go and form the band. The first time that I went to the meeting, Beni went with me. The initial rehearsals we did as a band, Beni made sure to be present so as to encourage me. Beni believed so much in me. Those episodes saw the beginning of Sweet Unit with Wahehe, Joel, Reginald, George Black, Johnson... And the beat goes on!

  • Original Air Date:

    The Wings

ABA Music as represented by The Wings. Arinze was an able band leader. Spud Nathan was everybody's vocal darling. Manford Best was no less powerful on the vocals, but he combined good guitar presentation and one of the best set of compositions anyone could listen to! Listening to Manford Best's songs will make you wonder how exactly he came about his songwriting gift. The band's 'banana' album featured knock-out tunes. I called it 'banana' album because of the banana on the sleeve of their album. Simply put, everyone loved The Wings.
