    in Writing

El-R Charis is a native of Chicago, bred and raised on the Southside. Educated in the Chicago
Public School system in a time when teachers took an active role as alternate parents to those
entrusted to them daily: El-R took her first creative writing class in an After-School program
under the tutelage of Mrs. Leila BoNey. During the program, this Author's natural flair for writing
became immediately apparent to the program director thus a friendship/mentorship identity was
formed. This connection lasted throughout the Author's formative years until the untimely
passing of El-R's beloved mentor in her early twenties.
In addition to her enthusiasm for writing, El-R Charis majored in Commercial Art as a high
school student, even graduating from higher education with an AAS in Art & Design from Robert
    Morris University, Chicago.

Throughout her life, El-R Charis has endured many obstacles she credits for fine tuning her craft
with a keen level of detail, which many people who have struggled through life's journey can
relate. A Poet who expresses a lifetime of observation, harmony through conflict, and ultimately
self acceptance: This openly gay author utilizes words, artistic talents, as well as photography
to lay out graphic depictions of the ups and downs of moving through society. El-R's newest
endeavor a publishing company, Phi Phe Publications, offer a variety of services from editing to

Join us for a discussion of Thanksgiving and all the little and large thngs that can go...completely awry!  Whether you are cooking the dinner, preparing for the dinner, or forced (sometimes it seems) to attend the dinner, the holidays can often be a "trying" time.
Holidays are full of traditions and people we know, don't know, and sometimes are a surprise, but the energy is prime for emotional upheavals and offhand remarks.  You might hear things like: "Oh don't be so sensitive!" or "I was only joking" and the ever popular "Do you think you should be eating that, or having another, or Haven't you had enough?"  Yes it's the prime time of people releasing all their "judgemental" skills that may not be appreciated.  Still---we all are grateful deep down that we are connected to someone even if they are far away.  Thanksgiving is just that: Giving thanks for what's brought us to where we are or are going!

I will refute this assertion and tell you why through documentation and DNA studies results being interpreted to fit such an agenda. What is the final outcome of such studies and the implications of such fodder. Why some will continue to argue a "Newman's Ridger Only" attitude and why the core Melungeon group seem to be stuck with a certain group of families located only in that area, and why this is an innacurate view of who the Melungeons really were.

  • I Should be Grateful

    in Art

This weekend in the US is Thanksgiving weekend, where we eat too much and give thanks for all that we're grateful for.
But I have spoken with some women lately in some pretty desparate and emotionally abusive situations. Logic tells them that they should put up with the abuse because there's enough other good things in their life and they should be grateful.
On any given day, there is an abundance to be grateful for: our health, our jobs, our friends and family. We absolutely should be grateful for those small miracles that surround us. But, we shouldn’t use those things as a crutch to keep us stuck in emotionally abusive relationships.
We are, in fact, deserving of all the abundance life offers every day as well as deserving of being loved, honored and cherished in our relationships.
Tell the Truth. Show up in Love. Live in Freedom.

  • Journey to Empowerment - The Visionary Book Club

    in Books

We will discuss the November's Book of the month which is Do You 12 Laws To Access The Power In You To Achieve Happiness and Success by Russell Simmons.
Since rising out of the New York City streets over twenty-five years ago, Russell Simmons has helped create such groundbreaking ventures as Def Jam Records, Phat Farm, and Def Comedy Jam. Russell might have helped introduce hip-hop to the world, but he credits his success to his belief in a strong set of principles—or laws. In twelve straightforward steps, Russell reveals a path that can be followed by anyone struggling to realize their dreams. Russell’s laws stem from the belief that it’s impossible to receive any sort of lasting success from the world without giving something of lasting value to the world first. Blending business insight, universal spiritual truths, and an inspired sense of purpose, Do You! crosses the lines of age, race, and background, with wisdom that will lift you up and motivate you to pursue your vision.

  • How I am organizing myself to make a living as an entrepreneur and artist.

    in Art

I setup this account well over a year ago. This is the first time that I am creating an episode. Well, better late than never right? If I got into the how and why of what took so long to get this thing going I'd have enough material for a four part series. In any case today's topic is one of encouragement and inspiration. I started painting and drawing when I became homeless in 2011 and moved around until May of this year. I've managed to acumulate alot of artwork, I managed to salvage some from the storage unit I lost and lived with most of it in my little ford focus, I sold some on the street when I needed gas money and food. Now I live in my own home and have begun the process of organizing my paintings for sale, using the internet to join social media to gain exposure and develop my craft. Also siging up for events and festivals to sell my artwork.
The concept of Insomnia Blues Arts and Crafts has lived in my head for a few years. Today's episode will cover what pushed me to get my work about there. Letting go of fear was a huge step for me, getting informed made things happen. Learning about local organizations that support the arts and artist are a few of the things I will be sharing with you. If you are an artist this is an episode for you. For thirty minutes I will share my hopes, thoughts, and ideas for making the most of what you have.
Even the name of the business has a story behind it and I will be sharing it with you. Creativity is a great gift and to make a living from it is a blessing. So listen in to find out how I got here and what is next for Insomnia Blues Arts and Crafts.

  • Author Louann Carroll Takes It To The Streets With Jennifer Perry!

    in Books

    Word On The Street Team
Have you heard? Authors have gotten wise to what marketing firms and musicians have been up to for eons. That’s leveraging the talent and enthusiasm of a group of fans with a goal of raising the profile of an author and their books to drive sales. How is it done and where do you get one?
Even before I studied Entertainment Publicity at UCLA I saw how the excitement of fans can rouse the herd to follow and hop on the proverbial bandwagon. Sadly a lot of authors just aren’t getting with this secret weapon.
Author/writer/blogger Louann Carroll gets it and has kindly agreed to be my guest and share her experiences with a street team. I believe that Carroll, author of Gemini Rising, A Shadow Of Time, The Light And The Flame, Journey-The Adventures Of Leaf and others, may be ready to recruit more for her team. Hint: Like all insider groups membership has its privileges!

    in Books

El-R Charis is a native of Chicago, bred and raised on the Southside. Educated in the Chicago  Public School system in a time when teachers took an active role as alternate parents to those  entrusted to them daily: El-R took her first creative writing class in an After-School program  under the tutelage of Mrs. Leila BoNey. During the program, this Author's natural flair for writing  became immediately apparent to the program director thus a friendship/mentorship identity was  formed. This connection lasted throughout the Author's formative years until the untimely  passing of El-R's beloved mentor in her early twenties.  In addition to her enthusiasm for writing, El-R Charis majored in Commercial Art as a high  school student, even graduating from higher education with an AAS in Art & Design from Robert  Morris University, Chicago.  Throughout her life, El-R Charis has endured many obstacles she credits for fine tuning her craft  with a keen level of detail, which many people who have struggled through life's journey can  relate. A Poet who expresses a lifetime of observation, harmony through conflict, and ultimately  self acceptance: This openly gay author utilizes words, artistic talents, as well as photography  to lay out graphic depictions of the ups and downs of moving through society. El-R's newest  endeavor a publishing company, Phi Phe Publications, offer a variety of services from editing to  ghost writing. Motion in Poetry, the Web site at ElrCharis.com rallies all things embodied in the  mind of El-R Charis: Words, Pictures, Passion.

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay!
