  • Philmchology W/Brenda B: John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)

    in Film

John W. Campbell wrote a Novella entitled "Who Goes There?" which included  the short story of the same name first published under his pseudonym Don A. Stuart in Astounding Science-Fiction magazine, which now goes under the name Analog Science Fiction.  It is one of the longest running Science Fiction Magazines in circulation since 1930.  This little story "Who Goes There" "...was voted one of the finiest science fiction novellas ever written" in 1973 by the Science Fiction Writers of America -Wikipedia.
The story was made into a movie in 1951 by Howard Hawks (The Thing From Another World), In 1982 John Carpenter's The Thing, and 2011 Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr. The Thing -2011
Here's a nice "Retrospective Review by Oliver Harper" about John Carpenter's Thing
This is a movie about trust and never being certain what or who you are dealing with, which includes one's self.  It's a great story, which has been produced quite brilliantly in three different interpretations, albeit John Carpenter's is the most closely followed to John W. Campbell's initial writings.  Let's talk trust, gore and the real possibility of knowing your own self!

  • Kleftikos Radio: This Is Halloween

    in Poetry

Kleft Jaw and Kleftikos Radio had so much fun doing their second open mic show a couple of weeks ago, they're bringing that fiendish concept back for Halloween.
Join us on October 25th (8pm WST/9pm MT/10pm CST/11pm EST). Kleft Jaw staff will be joined by a host of surprise guests. The theme for the evening is Halloween, and the door is wide open as to what that can entail. Surprise guests and callers just like you will join the show to offer their favorite horror stories and poems. These can be original works, or just pieces that have kept them awake during those long, weird nights.
Rumor has it that Vincent Price himself is going to drag his old body out of the grave, and join us for a conversation on the works of Edgar Allen Poe. Kleft Jaw cannot confirm the validity of this terrifying rumor at this time, so you're just going to have to tune on October 25th.
Whether you want to contribute your own original or favorite scary stories/poems, or if you just want to creep us out, tune in on October 25th (8pm WST/9pm MT/10pm CST/11pm EST), and scare the living hell out of Kleft Jaw.

  • The Author Chat Show with Lynda D. Brown

    in Books

Meet author Walter Biondi. He'll be my guest this Saturday, Oct. 25th on the Author Chat Show. This will be Walter's first appearance on the show and I'm really looking forward to chatting with him about his books, The Promiscous Puppeteer and Jeremiah's Tale.
    About the book:
"The Promiscuous Puppeteer," is a multifaceted story about a secret gold exploration company funded by a syndicate comprised of some of the largest mining companies in North America and a CEO who is approached by a Mexican Native American woman, whose skills, from a sordid and seedy past, have the potential to help launch the world's largest gold discovery onto the international stage. Chinese intelligence and embassy officials, US politicians, unscrupulous industry leaders, and a fledgling but growing and menacing Native American mafia are all primary constituents of a compelling and momentous drama that takes place throughout the western third of the United States. It all begins in a five-thousand-foot-high remote desert location called Tonopah, Nevada."
    About the author:
" I was in and out of jails, facing starvation, illness, violent beatings, robbery, and hypothermia. I had become a total failure who was on the brink of human existence. I had nothing, and no more left, to loose except life itself. My life seemed limited to an early demise, rock bottom poverty or a prison. In time, after having been arrested again, and after hitting rock bottom, I fought my own self imposed destruction and resolved to climb my way up and out of life threatening wretchedness and poverty. In time, I created a new life for myself and became a storied and unimaginable success

    in Writing

I've used Scrivener for seven years, back in the days when it was a simple(r) software with plenty of promise and a few lovable bugs. When I started this podcast, I'd dreamed of asking the creator, Keith Blount, to come on the show, and I was so excited when he agreed! We talk about his inspiration for Scrivener, some of the lesser-known functions, and the question that's on every user's lips: when's the iPad/iPhone version coming out? Join us on this special bonus episode, and you'll hear the discount code to get your own copy of this incredible writing software at a special price!

  • Author Sean Page on Reverie Radio

    in Books

Lori Hays is VERY excited to introduce author Sean Page all the way from England on Reverie Radio.
Sean T Page is an zombie survival & alien invasion expert and has provided consultancy to private industry and governments around the world on what to do in the event of an apocalypse. Admittedly, few of them actually asked for the advice in the first place. His qualifications include a 25-metre swimming badge from school and several merits for good attendance.  He also holds a grade D GCSE in English.
He launched the Ministry of Zombies in 2009 to raise awareness of the zombie threat and has published The Official Zombie Handbook UK and War against the Walking Dead. He is banned from most government buildings now and some people think he’s weird. His daytime job is with the Ministry of Alien Defence where he is on the longest induction known to the civil service.
In May 2013, he completed a 5 day stint in complete isolation sealed in a nuclear bunker. You can see the daily video blogs & read about it on his website www.ministryofzombies.com. (Things get strange around Day Three!)
In May 2014, it was 6 day stint in the Sinai Desert in Egypt. That was tough.
