  • Teshanne Phillip Gets You Ready to Elevate Your Life

    in Writing

Growing up as a young girl on St. John, in the US Virgin Island Teshanne Phillip fondly recalls the island women who served as her mentors. Now, with the release of her first book, Elevate, Phillip hopes to empower young women in the Virgin Islands — and nationwide — by sharing her own experiences and by teaching them about subjects like forgiveness, achieving greatness, and setting and accomplishing goals.
“I am so excited about this new project, and I am blown away by the feedback that I’ve been receiving on the book,” said Phillip.
The St. John native, who graduated from Ivanna Eudora Kean High School in 1999, today lives in South Florida where she leads a mentorship program at a foster home. Her relationship with the young women in the home inspired her to help others achieve greatness.
Phillip’s passion for the girls in the foster home is evident as she speaks about her interactions with them. Ranging in age from 14 to 17, the young women were removed from their homes due to their parents passing away or being incarcerated. Some of the teens have been in the home from a very young age.

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay!

    in Books

Tune in and join me as I welcome this week's guest.
It's the last show of the year and we'll be live for an after-Christmas show.  My guest this week will be author Noah James Hittner. We'll be discussing his books: Something to Give Back, Beyond Victim and Villain & The Modern-Day Buddha.
The Modern-Day Buddha (MDB) is a handy reference guide which offers ten short and impactful techniques that anyone can use on-the-spot to provide a quick, wholesome, and inspiring way to travel through their day-to-day life experience. Quite honestly, it could be called a handbook for wholeness.
Each technique contains an anecdote, accessible insight, and simple suggestions for action steps. All-in-all, it was my intention that the MDB’s message be clearly conveyed in a way that is gentle, efficient, and intriguing.

North Florida’s Mixed-blood Indian People, Rediscovery of a Forgotten People In the early 1800s, dozens of Siouan-speaking Cheraw families, including Catawbas and Lumbees, fled war and oppression in the Carolinas and migrated to Florida; just as native Appalachicola Creeks were migrating away. Being neither Black nor White, the Cheraw descendants were persecuted by the harsh “racial” dichotomy of the Jim Crow era and almost forgot their proud heritage. Today they have rediscovered their past. This is their story. Creek Eastern Siouan Cheraw Indians, generally located in the panhandle of Florida. Related groups (Porch Creek, Redbones, Brass Ankles, etc) in which we can establish a surname connection locally or by association later (Mt Tabor Community). The Becky Book Club Talk Live Radio Show features The Life You Want one of hundreds from my Nook Book collecion. The featured segment of The Life You Want is Freezing Thoughts  a powerful demonstration of the power of one's mind. Murphy is the young Irish man who works at a slaughterhouse and makes a decision to go into the freezer to get a bite to eat. Murphy like the rest of the crew knows that the door on the freezer is not working. The moment he goes into the freezer to get a bite, the door closed and locked behind him. Murphy immediately panicks, because he knows anyone in it for longer than three hours would freeze--and there he was stuck in the freezer with only a t-shirt on him.
The following morning the boys come to their shift to find Murphy laying there frozen. An autopsy revealed that Murphy had indeed froze to death. The day Murphy died the manger had checked the freezer and seen that it was broken and had it scheduled to be fixed the morning Murphy was found. The night that Murphy froze, the freezer never dropped below room temperature. Murphy believed the freezer would freeze him! Does that mean that YOUR belief have the power to dictate your life. What happens when your belief change?

Episode 51: Interview with Author and Culture Critic Jonathan Charles Bruce

    in Writing

He's BACK! Jonathan came on the show a while ago to discuss his novel Project Northwoods, and we wandered down the road of good writing, Buffy, and other unusual components in writing and popular culture. Once again, Jonathan does not disappoint. With the release of his mystery thriller Washed Hands, Jonathan once again proves that tropes will never stand his way when it comes to good storytelling. And once again, we venture off-script and discuss popular culture issues like Buffy, 50 Shades, Pretty Little Liars, and all other manner of pondering.
