The Defense Department Cyber Crime Center (DC3) has conducted their DC3 Digital Forensics Challenge for the last 4 years to identify and recognize the Top Guns in the community and solve real-world challenges that digital forensic examiners face every day. The real-world cases could be the forensic examination of a terrorist's laptop, the artifacts of a sophisticated intrusion by an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) into a critical infrastructure system, the desktop of a suspected spy, or to identify the producer of child abuse images. As technology proliferates into every aspect of daily life, the crucial evidence that proves or disproves an allegation may be found in a desktop computer at work or home, a GPS reciever, wrist watch, thumb drive, CD, DVD, cell phone, camera, or game system. Jim Christy (SA Ret), director of Future Exploration for DC3, will discuss why he created the contest and the future plans for the Challenges.

Episode #31: Addressing Emerging Contaminants in the Environment: A Defense Department Perspective

Shannon Cunniff is the Director of the Chemical and Material Risk Management Directorate within the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Her Emerging Contaminants program brings together science, technology and policy to identify chemicals with emerging environmental and health risks, evaluate mission risks as well as opportunities to manage risks, and oversees implementation of risk management measures. This discussion will focus on how emerging contaminants -- such as sulfur hexafluoride, nanomaterials, and perchlorate -- are reviewed and acted upon through the collaboration of multiple components and the Services within DoD. The Emerging Contaminants Program was recently recognized as a finalist by Harvard in its "Innovations in Government" award and relies on scientific expertise and input to carry out its work.

Episode #29: The TIDES Project - Leveraging Worldwide Talent to Support Civil-Military Operations

Dr. Linton Wells II, Distinguished Research Professor and Force Transformation Chair at the National Defense University, will discuss TIDES, an international research project focused on sustainable support to stressed populations in post-war, post-disaster, impoverished environments. TIDES is unique in that it draws on a world-wide network of public-private, whole-of-government and trans-national talent to promote integrated planning and unity of action where there's no unity of command. Areas of focus include low-cost logistics, information sharing, social network development and trust-building. TIDES is being coordinated out of the Center for Technology and National Security Policy at the National Defense University.

Episode #28: Designing Intelligent Braces and Exoskeletons to Facilitate Walking After Paralysis

Immobility remains a major problem for disabled veterans. Immobility and wheelchair dependence cause degenerative changes in the bones, joints, hearts, lungs, and skin. Dr. Ronald Triolo, Department of Veterans Affairs Senior Research Career Scientist, Case Western Reserve University Professor, Executive Director of the Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center of Excellence, and Associate Director of the Cleveland Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Center seeks to improve the quality of life for individuals with paraplegia following spinal cord injury through an innovative bracing system that will provide enhanced mobility. The ultimate goal is an articulated thoracic-hip-knee-ankle-foot orthosis that allows users to stand, walk, and climb stairs safely and efficiently with a minimum of effort.
