Rumors hit the airwaves in April of 1986 and was first shunned by Urban Radio due to it's brash sound and the fact that it was on an independent black owned record labled: Jay Records . Since the group hailed from the Oakland/San Francisco Bay area, they promoted it highly in their hometown and hoped that the local Urban stations would play their hit, none did.
By May of 1986, a young program director named Terry Avery of KKDA 104FM in Dallas Fort Worth heard RUMORS and added it to the stations playlist and it caught fire! Other Urban Radio stations across the country took notice and followed suit by adding RUMORS as well.
Rumors then entered the Billboard HOT BLACK/R&B Singles Charts, and on July 13th of 1986 reached the number #1 spot and held there for 2 weeks. Rumors also hit Billborard's Top 40/POP charts and broke the top 10, by reaching the #8 spot.
