According to the peonage research of Antoinette Harrell, politics  played a major role in holding people in peonage conditions. Her research revealed that several United States Presidents,  Governor Earl Brewer of Mississippi and other elected officals were well aware that people were held as slaves and peons well into the 20th century. Many politicians had to protect the best interest of the large businesses who endorse them and supported their campaigns. Please join Nurturing Our Roots BTR Host and Peonage Researcher Antoinette Harrell, Professor Clare Washington of Portland State University and her students for this discussion on politics and peonage.
