Robert "Deacon" Vernon was born July 10, 1832 in Rankins County near Brandon, Mississippi and died July 15, 1915. He was the son of Mrs. Harriett Book   "Grandma Booker" to all her of her descendants. Born a slave, he purchased his freedom and it is said that became a slaveholder. He accumlated 3,500 acres of land in Tangipahoa Parish, LA. Although he could neither read or write, he possessed God given wisdom which he used wisely to provide for his family, the church, and community.  After he retired he gave each of his children 100 acres of land as they married and established  their homes. This area became known and still is known as Vernon Town today. Please join host Antoinette Harrell and Robert "Deacon" Vernons', the great, great, granddaugther Ferradine Cutrer Hannibal as she shares her family history with us tonight.
