J. Spencer: Bass Player/Producer/Vocalist

With a music career spanning over two decades, J. Spencer has been a well recognized fixture in the South Florida Music scene.  The journey started for J as the original founding member and lead vocalist/bass player for the group HASHBROWN a high energy, funk core power trio that was a force to be reckoned with in the late 90’s and into the 2000’s.  The group garnered critical success and managed to open for a diverse range of acts including Method Man, Rick James, Fishbone, Sheryl Crow, and the godfather of soul himself, James Brown, who’s encouraging words of “keep funkin’” served as fuel for his musical journey.   Linking with friend and Producer Jon to form the electro-vintage pop duo, COTTON & HATE, the duo’s indie release  “reverse” was an eclectic array of uptempo electro retro funk jams spawned from a 2 week impromptu recording session that allowed J the ability to vocally explore new sonic landscapes via Jon’s production. J also collaborated with former Hasbrown guitarist Duncan Cameron to form Black & Tan, an ode to their love of acoustic folk and country soul.  The duo’s country space odyssey WEST OF WEST and the followup PORCH, were full of soulful songs of isolation, lost love, and underdog anthems, that contrasted the bombastic energy of earlier projects with truthful acoustic eloquence.  A drive to return to performing live and the call for a bassplayer via a friend of a friend led to being the bassplayer and musical director for Community Property, a high energy funk-rock four piece who's sound is best described as Otis Redding meets Van Halen.
