What is it we might miss when we don't acknowledge our progress, especially the small steps along the way? Please call in and celebrate, brag do a happy dance in honor of all you do as an artist in the world. How are you using your talents and what would you like to take forward in 2014 and what would you like to leave behind? Getting ready for goal setting by looking your past year is the first step. Join us live to practice your language, this is your time to talk about your work in your athentic voice. Craft your words as well as your vission. Here's a few artists and how they talk about their work or art: “One day I’m satisfied and the next day everything seems bad.” (Monet) “As artists, we do much better trying to keep things simple. We do better to compare ourselves solely to ourselves. Self-inventory is useful, while self-condemnation is not.” (Matthew Dibble) “The results is what counts.” (Monet) “These are not paintings in the usual sense; they are life and death merging in a fearful union.” (Clyfford Still) “An artist must be rooted in his own time.” (Courbet) "The job of the artist is to always deepen the mystery." (Francis Bacon) "What a genius, that Picasso. It's a pity he can't paint." Today's show topic is Politics and Art. How do current events and politics affect your artwork? Are there topics you feel are too controversial to address in your art? What is the role of art in creating discussion around  current issues? Is there a certain style or genre you feel lends itself more to political work? What kind of positive or negative fall out has resulted from addressing a hot topic in your work? Guest host Matt Sesow whose current show "Trickle Down" at Access Gallery is a nod to the buzzwords and posturing Matt sees everyday from his studio in Washington DC. Each day in July Matt takes a headline from the Washington Post and paints an entire painting based on the headline. Matt will help facilitate the discussion and touch on his own experiences. "While some of his images might be considered brutal or brutish in the same way as, say, Francis Bacon, they are only real life with the beauty secrets stripped away, the cover girl make-up stuffed back into society's compacts. They are the skeletons, out of the closet, with the raw meat still attached. Sesow may very well be the most important artist working today. His paintings are explosions of color. Punk rock energy paired with the symbolism of alienation dressed in the finery of a rainbow. As he says, he is trying to create something that is funny, political and chaotic. In that quest he has been successful on a grand scale. Sharing the story of how, from the beginning, she has pursued writing and the visual arts simultaneously. When working in photography, it is true that the visual images illustrated the writing, although in photography, at first the writing explained the pictures--although that is not what motivated Niela to pick up the tape-recorder and, subsequently, the pen. Painting came later, when she wanted to immerse herself in color, but the painting and writing have always been separate processes. In Niela's book the writing does not describe the painting and the visual images do not illustrate the text. Niela will elaborate on the nature of the relationship between the two parallel narratives. In addition to touching on what motivated her to write and pursue the visual arts and how they relate to each other, We will also be talking about the role of intuition, trust, and risk-taking in the creative process. The challenge and skill involved becomes evident with the list of required technical, material, and timing 'rules' for creating the films. Each film can be no longer than 7 minutes in length (including credits) and must be edited in-camera and returned to the event organizers no later than 24 hours after the start of the event. All films must include 5 of the eleven items announced at the start of the event in “The Brief.” All films are judged to come up with the Top 10 Films for the Gala Screening Event. The Shoot Out is dedicated to getting as much exposure for the filmmakers and their films as possible.  Questions for the radio show: What form of art is the shoot out? Encaustic paint is made from beeswax, pigment, damar resin and occasionally other additions to harden or crackle the paint., like carnauba wax. Encaustic paint is used hot, and is kept so on a heated palette, and fused with heat, either in the form of a heat gun, blow torch, or by exposure to brilliant sun during a warm summer. The name encaustic comes from the Greek 'enkaustikos', meaning to burn in. All layers of wax and collage need to be fused after each application of new wax. The surface can be made rough, you may collage items into it, the paint can even be cast into sculpture. It can be made as shiny as glass, and buffed to brilliance. It can look very different, like an oil painting or even like a coarse plaster wall, depending on how it is used. 88 88 ArtLook, 8888ArtLook.com, Annette Coleman, AnnetteColemanArtist.com, Diane Kelly, DCKellyStudio.com Jim Caldwell, ArtworkNetwork.com Catherine Carilli, catherinecarilli.com Jackie Butler, artgraze.com Encaustic Art Institute, EAINM.com 01:01:00Annette ColemannoEncaustic Painting,Fine Art,Art History,Painting,Visual ArtistOur guest host Diane Kelly of DCKellyStudio.com will help us explore Encaustic Painting and the many methods that artists use with this very flexable medium.71-Social Media for the Visual Artist-too much or too littlehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/annette-coleman/2011/08/12/71-social-media-for-the-visual-artist-too-much-or-too-littleArthttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/annette-coleman/2011/08/12/71-social-media-for-the-visual-artist-too-much-or-too-little/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/annette-coleman/2011/08/12/71-social-media-for-the-visual-artist-too-much-or-too-littleFri, 12 Aug 2011 03:00:00 GMT71-Social Media for the Visual Artist-too much or too little Social Media for the Visual Artist, too much or too little. With guest host Donna Roe Daniell, LCSW We have new research about how the brain processes emotions and how to work more successfully to clear stuck memories and emotions. Art is one way in which we can access these feelings and process them. We have learned from the tremendous popularity of art in recent times to allow the artist of every age freedom to create. Picasso, Klee, and others taught us to respect the child's vision, as well as our own. How do you access your inner child? Though expressing our emotions and inner thoughts we can process and make sense of our world.
