Fertility problems can occur for many reasons, some more easily treated than others.  When the cause of fertility issues can be identified, acupuncture is especially helpful and is sometimes even used in conjunction with Assisted reproductive technology such as IVF.

Acupuncture for fertility is used in both women and men with a fairly good rate of success.  In women, acupuncture has been most successful in cases where the cause of fertility problems is related to the functioning of the female reproductive system.  Functional issues include endometriosis, hormone problems, and ovulation problems.  Acupuncture is less successful in women when the fertility problems are related to structural abnormalities in the reproductive system, such as a blocked fallopian tube or uterine stucture damage.  Today it is becoming increasingly common to see women begin acupuncture several months prior to IVF treatments, then continue acupuncture throughout the course of treatment.  The success rate of acupuncture and IVF together has been about 51 percent, while women who undergo IVF alone have a success rate of 36 percent.

In men, acupuncture has been used to aid fertility in two ways.  First, men with impotence problems such as erectile dysfunction sometimes find that acupuncture can provide relief.  Also, acupuncture has been used to help men who have a low sperm count or some other type of sperm motility problems.  Some studies have shown that men who used acupuncture for fertility tend to have higher sperm counts and healthier sperm.

Acupuncture for fertility is being used today in both women and in men to provide a treatment or a supplemental treatment for a very painful problem.  While there is no guaranteed way to beat fertility problems, acupuncture is one of the ways to boost the odds of having an improved level of fertility.
