    Date / Time:

    Research and the Researcher

As Genealogy Researchers we are called upon to go back in time. That means that we are looking at the history surrounding our ancestors. This is especially true of those who looking for People of Color in the Americas. While looking for Slave ancestors we want to see what their condition was prior to or after the Civil War. What was going on politically? Many factors depend on where they were located during and after the Civil War. Those who are seeking information on slavery, will be well served to cover Historic Events like  the Underground Railroad.

Once a time line is established, learn about the history of the area, whether local, state or nationally. Look for the churches and schools your ancestor attended. The Anglican and Episcopalian Churches, (and later Catholic), had Mission Schools for children of Native ancestry. Then there was the, Trail of Tears, which included slaves. There were slave holding families who moved from places like Virginia, and Tennessee, into Mid Western and Western States. These facts are important and an integral part of Genealogy Research. Other places to look for information include the Prince Hall Masons, and the Eastern Stars, two traditionally black organizations.
