Families whose loved ones have been killed by Police Action will co host and share their stories. A Nation of Flaws is a book that goes back to the inception of Colonialism and the laws that allowed the killing of Natives for their land, their enslavement, and eventual removal from their ancients lands, to Reservations. Once Natives were dealt with African Slaves were brought into the Americas to work the stolen lands. Christianity was used as a means to Assimilate Natives and then Africans, although most European Christians broke every commandment in their Bible. The laws passed were meant to protect the White Male Patriarchy formed during the Colonial Period. America's laws, spoken and unspoken are a continuation of those same laws.  There are written and unwritten laws regarding the police killing of Minorities with impunity. Most Police Shootings are of African Americans, and then Hispanics, and then Natives. It is in fact Natives who have sustained the longest period of Genocide in history, over 500 years. African Americans are now in the cross hairs of American Justice and it is time to speak out. It is time to have an open discussion of the racism and repression visited upon people of color in America.  Join us as we have this discussion and share the stories of lives lost included in the book, including, Kerry Baxter Junior, James Rivera Junior, Mario Romero, Derrick Gaines, Antonio Guzman Lopez, O'Shaine Evans, Eric Garner, Sandy Bland, Aiyana Jones, Clinton Allen, Tamir Rice, and many more.  00:01:00Anita WillsnoKerry Baxter Junior,James Rivera Junior,Mario Romero,Derrick Gaines,Antonio Guzman LopezTune in, as the American past is revisited to make sense of the present as Author Anita Wills, book A Nation of Flaws is discussed. GET OUT AND VOTE  Is there a New Jim Crow or is it the same old Jim Crow? This show will discuss the issue of Mass Incarcaration and the Murder of Black and Brown Males by Law Enforcement.  The incarceration rates disproportionately impact men of color: 1 in every 15 African American men and 1 in every 36 Hispanic men are incarcerated in comparison to 1 in every 106 white men. 2. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, one in three black men can expect to go to prison in their lifetime. Does that mean White Males committ less crime? Statistically White Males are the most likely to commit rape, Mass Murder, Spree Killings, and Serial Killings. The average White Serial Killer is allowed to repeatedly commit crimes such as rape and murder before being, "Profiled."  By the time they became sloopy they are old and have repeatedly killed over a span of years. With African American Males they are Profiled before every committing a crime. Often they are shot and killed by Police on, "Suspicion" of a crime such as Robbery.  This past week a white male, Eric Frein who shot two deputies, killing one was captured in Pennsylvania alive. Had that been a black male they would have went into his neighborhood and anywhere his relatives lived. They would have harrassed every relative he had and arrested them, and any black mail who fit the, "Profile."   We have a call in guest, Isabelle Gravenstein. She is working with a young man who has been sentenced to 20 years to life for a crime he did not commit. This is a similar issue to my son Kerry Baxter Senior who is serving 66 years to life for a crime he did not commit. The cold part is they know these men are innocent but any old Black Man Will Do! This week our show will give voice to Mothers & Families of Murdered Children. Since slavery people of African Descent have been seperated from each other. The Slave Ships were filled with children and young people torn from their families arms in Africa. During Slavery families were split and chidlren sold away from parents. As a Slave, renowned Orator, Frederick Douglass saw his mother about four to five times and always at night. She was a Field Slave and would travel to where he was and lie with him at night.  Slavery, seperation, and death were a part of the life of Africans brought to America's Shores. It appears to be a part of our lives in 21st Century America as well. Little has changed in the 21st Century, for the majority of people of African Descent. The few who do make it, do not bother to reach back and help the masses. In fact here in our own Country we are denied basic Human Rights. Parents of murdered children seldom if ever get Justice, especially if the Police were involved.  On this weeks show we share the stories of mothers (and families), whose are seeking justice for their murdered children, whether by police or those who have no respect for their own lives or others. It looks like the more things change, the more they stay the same.  Tune in and Listen Up!   00:45:00Anita WillsnoFreedom Speaks,Mass Incarcaration,Inner City Violence,American Justice System,Prison Industrial ComplexFreedom Speaks is a part of the National Network in Action (NNIA), founded by Dr. Jean Kennedy and Dr. Floyd Harris Junior. They were the remnants of Negro/Indians who remained in an area of White Settler Farmers from Europe. Yet they were self-sufficient, Land Owners and Businessmen.       Thomas and Joseph Green owned Warranted and Patented land in Chester County (East Caln) in the early 1700's.  The Patents were signed by William Penn's sons, Thomas, John, and Richard. They were not squatters but held original title to the land they lived on. Tune in as more of their story is be shared on this broadcast. On  9/11/1851, Henry Green particpated in an event now known as the Christiana Resistance. He was a member of a group of free blacks vowing to use any means necessary to prevent fleeing slaves recapture.  Their mentor was Frederick Douglass, a Freed Slave himself, and their leader another Freed Slave, William Parker. The Underground Railroad path led through the Welsh Mountains going to all points North. Some of  the fleeing slaves remained on the Mountain under the protection of Green's Banditti. There are direct ancestors and others on the branch who are blood relatives. For me Genealogy is not only locating ancestors but profiling them through the historical context in which they lived. This is important especially with Native and African Ancestors whose history is mirred with movements they had no control over.    Notes and Documents of Free Persons of Color and Black Minqua The Life and times of Henry Green are now available for purchase through Amazon.com or the Leboudin Site.     Available at Leboudin Site Amazon.com           01:00:00Anita WillsnoGenealogy,African American History,Native American History,American History,Anita Talks GenealogyTonights show takes on an important Topic; of the historical backdrop in Genealogy.  Genealogy is a word used to describe a line of descent traced continuouslyMartinus L. Do you really want to know the truth of why there is a push to suppress voting rights for people of color? Besides the racist view that they  will overwhelmingly vote Democratic, there is racist undertone.  Anita Talks Genealogy,  explores the implications of voting under, "The New Jim Crow."  A book written by Michelle Alexander. It is a well researched piece of work that presents documented facts about the mass incarceration of Black people within the United States, Prison Industrial Complex.  Today the PIC is building Prisons at an alarming rate. There are actually Stocks for Prisons being traded on Wall Street.  It is not about being good and not going to Prison, because it is now part of a Money making System . Many of those who are imprisoned work in slave conditions. The pittance they are paid is usually going to pay off court fees. Besides being in prison they have no rights and in many cases their rights are not restored, even after serving a sentence. The majority of those imprisoned are African American Men, with Hispanics not far behind.  Studies show that African American males are sentenced to higher sentences then White Males,  even those who committed worse crimes. Voters Rights have everything to do with who is on the bench, who goes to prison, and how sentences are meted out. The Republicans in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and several other states are well aware of the Power of the Ballot, and have initiatives to suppress the right to vote. This show will explore the connection between, The New Jim Crow and the push to prevent African Americans from voting. The laws in place duiring colonial times were voted on by White Males.  It was white males who voted to seize Native Lands and Legalize Slavery.  Voting has always been contentious in this Land of Liberty. The 1965 Civil Rights Act revisited the Voting Rights Act, one that was already on the books.  In 1868, the 14th Amendment  to the Constitution of the United States granted citizenship and equal civil and legal rights to African Americans and slaves who had been emancipated after the American Civil War, including them under the umbrella phrase “all persons born or naturalized in the United States.”  However Free Blacks had been granted the right to vote in several Northern States. These days it is the Republicans attempting to restrict Voters Rights, but back then it was the Dixiecrats (Democrats). The goal was to prevent the empowerment of the blacks who in some cases outnumbered whites. In the 1856 Dred Scott decision, a statement was made that blacks “Had no rights which a white man was bound to respect; and that the Negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit (his meaning for the White man). We continue to fight for rights other Americans, (including immigrants), take for granted. There is a concerted effort to block our votes, because they are valuable. We are the most Powerful Voting block in America.  Tune in tonight as host Anita Wills Shares why We MUST Vote!! Their mentor was Frederick Douglass, a Freed Slave himself, and their leader was William Parker. The Underground Railroad path led through the Welsh Mountains going to all points North. Some of  the freeing slaves remained on the Mountain under the protection of Green's Banditti. Charles and Ambrose Lewis were brothers who fought at The Battle of Camden, and Ambrose was severally injured. He was bayoneted clean through and shot nine times, and still survived. The British took him prisoner on board a prison ship, which may be why he survived. Ambrose lived well into his eighties probably sharing tales of his war days with his children and grandchildren. Rawley Pinn was born in Indian town Lancaster County, to Robert and Margaret Pinn. He served an apprenticeship before leaving the area and settling in Amherst County. He was part of the Militia that left Amherst County and joined the unit headed by Marquis De Lafayette. They joined George Washington's forces in Yorktown, were the Battle against the British was being waged. It is an eerie coincidence that one of my ancestors was fighting in a losing battle (The Battle of Camden), while another was participating in the defining Battle of the War (The Siege of Yorktown). Nancy Gershman is a Digital Artist who transposes the present into the past. This is useful for those who are researching their ancestors, and want a pictorial history. Tune in for an interview with Nancy Gershman, as she shares about, "Healing Dreamscapes."  Nancy Gershman is a meaning-maker and private mythologist specializing in legacy portraiture. Using photographs, memories, family lore and genealogical history, her custom fine art photomontages tell a story about the whole person a) by remixing and repurposing photos to reveal truth and beauty that offsets loss and regrets and b) by augmenting the scene with historical imagery that stands in for scenes for which there are no photos. Her photomontages look like a snapshot from a dream. Perhaps most precious of all is the oral history and poetry her work engenders in those who receive her gifts. Tune in and Listen UP! We will take a journey back in time when enslaved Africans first arrived and escaped with the assistance of Native Americans. In the 1780s, certain white Virginians began to agitate for the termination of the Gingaskin Indian Reservation in Northampton County... In 1812 it was argued that: 'the place is now inhabited by as many black men as Indians... the Indian women have many of them married black men, and a majority probably, of the inhabitants are blacks or have black-blood in them... the real Indians [are few].' The reserve was divided (allotted) in 1813 and by 1832 whites had acquired most of it. The towns were set up as safe havens for African Americans, and thrived. It was in most cases, the surrounding white communities which took issue with the communities self sufficiency. In some cases they were isolated economically and could not sustain themselves. Rosewood Florida and the Black Business Community in Oklahoma were targeted by disgruntled whites and openly attacked. Host Anita Wills takes on the Mystery Surrounding the Birth of Christ. We examine why, these days, the meaning of Christmas seems to be more about Santa Claus then the birth of the Baby Jesus. Although it is a Holy Day, most of the depictions are of Santa Claus. The Christmas holiday, which is depicted as the birth of Jesus Christ, has been distorted almost out of existence. Although Western Countries celebrate Christmas on December 25, there is no definitive date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Add that to the fact that his name was not Jesus Christ! His first name was not Jesus and his last name was not Christ and that makes for quite a cunumdrum. We will exam Christ Birth, family, and his African heritage. That is the stance of the media in all elections, so what else is new? This week we will take a stroll back to Politics in America, and its affect on our community. My stance is to get out and vote and hold politicans accountable. It does not look like the system is going to change any time soon, and we should be in it to win it!! Whether your candidate wins or loses, is not the issue. Whoever wins is supposed to represent you, and if they do not, then show up at their headquarters, office, or front door (Hello). This show will open your eyes to what is really going on with Politics and elections. For instance, there President Obama, is not the first black President. Although Lincoln is identified as a white man, he is believed to be Melungeon (mixed raced). During reconstruction their were black Senators in Louisiana and South Carolina. This show is a must listen for those who want to know the history behind Racial Profiling. In the past America had Jim Crow, "An Act to Regulate Negroes Coming & Going", and an attempt to quantify people by race (Mulatto, Colored, Black, Mestizo). The one thing that allowed People of Color to be targeted was the Law. Anytime racism flared up in America, it was always supported by laws. After the desired results were achieved the laws were relaxed. Now that Americans are losing wealth and power, they are looking for a group to target. Hispanics are on the front lines, and African Americans are not too far behind. The laws of Colonial America are still in play although some are no longer on the books. Let's take a look at how these laws affected People of Color in the past and the push from Conservatives to implement them now. African Americans should pay attention to this saying, "If they come for them in the morning, they will be coming for me in the Noon Day." This is a show that should not be missed. Each week Host Anita Wills takes on an issue that related to genealogy, African American, and Native American History. Sundiata Keita (also known as Sogolon Djata or Mansa Sundiata) was from the Keita clan and born in the village of Niani near the modern day borders of Mali and and north-east Guinea. The Mandinka kingdoms were briefly conquered by the Ghana Empire (also known as the Wagadou Empire, c. 790 AD) under King Soumaoro Kanté during Sundiata’s youth. Sundiata Keita developed coalitions between the loosely federated Mandinka kingdoms to wage war against the Ghana Empire. In 1230 AD, Sundiata Keita led a rebellion against King Soumaba Cisse from the Mandinka's Kangaba kingdom-state in the south, which held important gold mines. By 1235 AD., forces from the Ghana Empire were still fighting the Mandinka rebels and converged at the Koulikoro Region of modern day Bamako, Mali to meet Sundiata’s army. Sundiatas’ forces destroyed the army of Sosso King Sumanguru Kanté (Susu or Soussou ethnic group in Guinea) at the Battle of Kirina (also known as Battle of Krina). The battle of Kirina is often cited as the final defeat of mediæval Ghana Empire in West Africa. Soumaoro Kanté is said to have disappeared in the Koulikoro mountains. Sundiata was crowned the title "Mansa" or "king of kings.” His three sons who succeeded him to the throne of the Mali Empire: Mansa Khalifa Keita, Ouati Keita, and Wali Keita, as well as a famed grandson Mansa Musa. The modern country of Ghana shares no territory with the medieval Ghana Empire, though some of its inhabitants claim ancestral lineage with the mediæval empire. Sundiata Keita (circa 1210-1260 ad) was the founder of the Mali empire in West Africa. He is now regarded as a great magician-king and the national hero of the Malinke-speaking people. Pennsylvania was right over the line from Virginia and Maryland, and a haven for escaped and freed slaves. The Underground Railroad ran throughout communities in Pennsylvania. When the Civil War started, the men of color joined the War effort from throughout the border communities. The United States Colored Troops (USCT) came to the forefront with the movie Glory, about the 54th Massachusetts. Other units and unsung heroes fought for the freedom of friends, relatives, and people they had never met. They were the soldiers of the United States Colored Troops. They had a lot to lose if the Union did not prevail. Free Blacks joined the USCT from as far away as Canada. Their mission was clear to put an end to slavery. Their mission was the exact opposite of the Confederates who were fighting to maintain slavery. You will be amazed at the efforts of the brave men of the United States Colored Troops. Fourteen men, including Christian Fleetwood, who later became an active community leader in Washington, D.C. were presented the Medal of Honor for valor at New Market Heights. Several were awarded to men who took charge of their units after all white commanders had fallen. Soldiers of distinction were also given the Army of the James or "Butler" medal, designated by champion of the black troops, Gen. Before 1861 the vast majority of African Americans had been slaves and had no legal rights of which to speak. In January 1865 an early attempt by General Sherman to redistribute 400,000 acres of abandoned rice plantations to African Americans was abruptly curtailed by President Johnson, and the self-sufficient African American community established under Tunis Campbell’s leadership on St Catherine’s Island, Georgia, also had to give up their land to its former owner in January 1866. With Cotton as a major export of the United States after the Civil War cheap and free labor continued to be a priority. This meant that blacks needed to be kept in the fields somehow. Most former slaves became wage-earning labourers and tenants. Various forms of sharecropping, share-renting, and crop-lien systems ensured that black tenants and croppers remained permanently in debt, and rarely got the chance to actually own their own land. When the price of cotton fell by nearly 50 per cent, between 1872 and 1877, the southern economy remained impoverished, and African Americans remained a deprived group within that context. The promise of land meant no more than the treaty's made with the Indians. It seems that any gains people of color make, can be rescinded at will, by the Powers That Be. The gains and losses have served to keep many African Americans in a reactionary mode. To some extent the struggle has continued even with an African American President. We will explore the historical implications of the Struggles of African Americans. Although it is pleasure to see a show such as Who Do You Think You Are, there is a down side. The show is entertaining, however it does not show the hard work which goes into doing research. There are people behind the scenes pouring over records, and charting the family history of these celebrities. Some of us do this for a living and it is no easy task. My own family lines go deep in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina, and are a mixture of African, Native, and European. Like Emmett Smith there was race mixing in my family in Virginia. Although things are changing, there was resistance to my connecting my lines to Historical figures like, George Washington and James Monroe. She was born in the Ivory Coast, where she was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Jamaica. She was the leader of the Windward Maroons, and has largely been ignored by historians. Amongst the Maroons themselves she is held in the highest esteem. Biographical information on Queen Nanny is somewhat vague, with her being mentioned only four times in written historical texts and usually in somewhat derogatory terms. She was the spiritual, cultural and military leader of the Windward Maroons and her importance stems from the fact that she guided the Maroons through the most intense period of their resistance against the British, between 1725 and 1740. Queen Nanny is presumed to have been born around the 1680’s in Africa’s Gold Coast (now known as Ghana). She was reported to belong to either the Ashanti or Akan tribe and came to Jamaica as a free woman. It is possible that Queen Nanny brought slaves of her own, reportedly being of royal African blood. It was not uncommon for African dignitaries to keep slaves. She was said to be married to a man named Adou, but had no children. She died in the 1730’s. The area was named by Welsh Settlers who received a Patent for the Land from William Penn. The Susquehanna were also knowns as the Black and/or white Minqua. That is the name that the people of the mountain, black/white/indian, answered to. They were not Tri-Racial Isolates, they were the People who lived by the River. Sometimes they were referred to as the People of the Muddy River. Although William Penn was a friend to the Indians, they were not a part of his transaction to Patent their land. The Susquehanna had no idea or concept about selling land, or even owning it. They occupied the land for over eleven thousand years before the Europeans settled there..., So it is not surprising that they remained in the Welsh Mountains, even after it was transferred away from them. As European Colonization took hold, they Welsh Mountain Natives were joined by Free Blacks, and then escaped slaves. Then came the disenfranchised whites from surrounding, Chester, Berks, Lancaster, and Dauphin County. From the early 1800's to 1976, the people of the Mountains lived their lives in Isolation. Their community elders were the Natives, who taught them how to survive in the Mountains. They lived for many generations in Interracial Peace and Harmony. The descendants of the Minqua, continue to live in and around the mountain, and throughout the Americas. This program is dedicated to the ancestors and descendants of the Minqua - People of the Welsh Mountains. 00:45:00Anita WillsnoGenealogy,History,Books,Minqua Indian,Tri-Racial IsolatesThe original inhabitants of the area known as the Welsh Mountains were the Susquehanna Indians. They were Natives, who intermixed with whites, and Free Blacks. Few people know of the Welsh Mountains, an area located in Southeastern Pennsylvania, bordering on Berks, Chester, and Lancaster Counties. Prior to the name change Native Americans inhabited the region for thousands of years. They were the Susquahannocks, Conestoga, and Lenai-Lenape (to name a few). They are now lumped together and called the Delaware Indians. Eventually the Trail of Tears, disease, and attacks caused the First Families of America to decline in numbers. The remnants of Natives in the Mountains were joined by whites, Free Blacks, and escaped slaves. For many generations they lived in self-imposed isolation away from the mainstream community. Once they left the mountains they were categorized by the color of their skin. Those with European features were assimilated as white. The most common racial designation was Colored or Mulatto. After the Trail of Tears, the racial designation of Indian was seldom used. Although Tri-Racial Isolates are connected to Southern States, there are groups like the Moors (Delaware), the Jackson Whites (New Jersey), and similar groups in the north. No name was given to my ancestors who resided in the Welsh Mountains, however some of the surnames were Harris, Green, Martin, Parker, Buzzard, Page, and Nocho. In the south there are the Melungeons (Virginia), Redbones (Louisiana), Turks & Brass Ankles (South Carolina), and the derogatory reference to Issue (Virginia). The History and Culture of the Welsh Mountain Community is the topic this week, along with other Communities. 00:45:00Anita WillsnoGenealogy,Family History,African American,Tri-Racial Isolates,American HistoryThe Welsh Mountains is a community near and dear to me, a place where my ancestors hailed from. Beginning with Lydia Hilliard, who was born in 1690. She was a servant to William Monroe, the Grandfather of President James Monroe. The excerpts are taken from the book, Pieces of the Quilt: The Mosaic of An African American Family (available at Amazon.com). Mary Bowden, was born in Westmoreland County Virginia, the daughter of William Monroe Junior, on February 20, 1730. Her Grandmother was a white woman, Lydia Hilliard (born 1690), the servant of William Monroe (Senior). Lydia had a daughter Mary, who was born in 1710. The father of the child was an an unidentified Negro man. There were laws on the books against the union of Whites and People of Color. However, in setting up a Patriarchy based on White males, the laws were written to exclude them from punishment. The women and children were dealt with severely by the courts (even if the child was a product of rape). The laws covered the Mulatto child's Indenture, and the mother being jailed and/or fined. The Children were to be Indentured our, and serve twenty years (males), and thirty years (female). William Monroe Senior was awarded the Indenture for Lydia's child, Mary. However the child was in the possession of a Reverend St. Shropshire. William went to court against the good Reverend, and demanded that Shropshire turn her over to him. The courts agreed and the child was returned to William Monroe's house, where her mother was a live in Servant. As a white woman, Lydia was probably serving a seven year Indenture. However, her Indenture may have had years added on after the birth of the Mulatto child. The episode will include an update on documents found relating to Lydia Hilliard and her descendants in Westmoreland County Virginia. 00:45:00Anita WillsnoGeorge Washington,African American History,Genealogy,History,Colonial VirginiaThis episode reflects on the lives of Four Generations of Females living in Colonial Virginia.
