  Judge Sotomayor has made the American dream her own. Born and raised in a South Bronx public housing project to Puerto Rican parents, Sotomayor has distinguished herself in academia, as a big-city prosecutor, and as a leading figure on the federal bench. If confirmed, Judge Sotomayor would start with more federal judicial experience than any new Justice in 100 years. First appointed to the Federal District Court by President George H.W. Bush, and then elevated to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals by President Bill Clinton, Judge Sotomayor is widely admired as one the finest legal minds in America today. As a trail-blazing Latina whose career has spanned nearly every aspect of the law, Judge Sotomayor will show fidelity to the Constitution while bringing to the Court a common sense understanding of how our laws affect the daily realities of people's lives.

  Guest: Ann Lee is an expert on financial derivatives and the global financial system. The Americas Policy Program is a program of the Center for International Policy in Washington DC. Prior to joining the Americas Policy Program, Carlsen was an international relations consultant, freelance writer and researcher. She publishes numerous articles and chapters on social, economic and political aspects of Mexico and recently co-edited Confronting Globalization: Economic Integration and Popular Resistance in Mexico. Carlsen appears on CBC, BBC, Costa a Costa, "Oppenheimer Presents," "Democracy Now," "Canal Once" (Mexico) and others, and is a frequent radio guest, on NPR, CBS and others. She has been quoted and published in a variety of print and electronic news sources including the Washington Post, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, InterPress Service, Tom Paine, Counterpunch, ALAI, and many others. She frequently appears as a speaker in national and international conferences such as "Lessons of NAFTA," "Bioregionalism," and agricultural forums. Carlsen holds a B.A. in Social Thought and Institutions from Stanford University and a Masters degree in Latin American Studies, also from Stanford. In 1986 she received a Fulbright Scholarship to study the impact of the Mexican economic crisis on women and has lived in Mexico City since then.
